Just a question...what would you use in preference to excel as a spreadsheet?

nunz:

Fact 5 - The Education Dept in its rush to implement the New Learning Environment, is being ably assisted by Apple to get  iPads into the hands of the children for them to do their homework. Unfortunately it seems that many schools are using Sum dog and a range of similar sites which require Flash. Pity the iPads don't do flash.

The problem is not iPads not supporting Flash, but someone having a site that is supposed to be used in schools that relies on Flash. That site will be completely useless to anyone with visual disabilities for example. Read up on WAI if you are interested, that really should be a requirement for any government sites if you ask me.

AND, you might not know this: But Android doesen't support Flash either...

You can get browsers on Android that (claim) to support flash. I tried "Photon browser" on a Samsung galaxy tab. But it really struggled with The Auckland Council GIS

Well, if you call that Flash support, then you can get "Flash support" on iOS as well with Photon Browser (and quite a few others).

Now, its not native support - its basically a "remote desktop app". (That is, it works as a kind of remote desktop to machines that play off the Flash content).

alasta: One of the biggest problems in corporates is the disconnect between the people who procure software versus those who use it.

Example; I work in finance and find Excel absolutely dreadful but I have to use it because IT people think "that's what most finance people use so that's probably what they want" and management in finance think "the IT guys must know what they're doing so there probably isn't anything better out there".

On the back side of that though- when departments go out and purchase their own software, without engaging IT, it causes support nightmares which IT then subsequently get blamed for because we don't know how to use the product.

So while some departments work as you've mentioned, equally there are departments who work in reverse.

We have, what I would consider, a pretty stellar IT team where I work. There are some very, very capable people here and we have a good relationship with the business. Even then though, we still run into issues where we had a couple of departments think "This looks good!" and purchase some software, which they expected us to support.
Things have gotten a lot better over the last couple of years though, as we now have a more official engagement process with the business, as well as removing a large amount of local admin rights etc.

That's a list, not what he uses.

Also, flash is dead. Shame on those that still use it.

Yeah - as has been said, I am aware that other products exist, I am interested in what is actually used.

I don't know what the alternatives are, but the list posted above is something I will definitely take a look at. I would be gobsmacked if there is nothing better out there than Excel which is a buggy, inconsistent and unstable mess.

Andib:

+1, Unless an extended support agreement has been purchased and you're still getting Windows Updates you should not be connecting a Windows XP PC to the internet.

I use different machines for different things. Don’t have 8.1 because Vista and Win7 meet my needs in the video and streaming departments and I like XP for email and browsing because it gives me more control under the bonnet (‘hood’ for loceff13). I just reinstalled it with no problems at all using my SP3 slipstream disk + all updates that were available when Microsoft dumped it. I don’t go near IE of course but XP works fine for specific things and is better than more modern alternatives for some. Lots of us are still perfectly happy with it.

As to why people us XP - there are a LOT of XP Desktops out there with OEM licenses - and 7/8 are harder to pirate. Ahh, memories of FCKGW-RHQQ2.

Actually, they are easier.

nunz: This week I have learnt a few new things. All of them were a bit of an eye opener or even worse, a right royal pain in the neck causing lots and lots of painful listening to horrendous music on hold.

Fact 1 - Apples iTunes server doesn't connect to any of their products. You don't use it to server content for iPhones, iPads or Apple TV. In fact as far as I can see it has no use at all.

Fact 2 - If you need / want to sign up to iTunes, and you have an icloud email address, you cant sign up unless you get a third party email address. That's correct. Apple will not let you use an Apple email account (like iCloud) as your primary email address when you register with iTunes. They want you to leave their cloud system and use another provider like Google, Microsoft or your local ISP.

Fact 3 - Hmm - sounds like I'm Apple bashing but they really did raise my eyebrows a few times this week. If you have an iPhone 5 / 6, and it has that 'find my phone using icloud' feature turned on, and the icloud account you used has been deleted - then your phone is effectively bricked as you cannot reset it, format it or make it respond to anyone else but your (non-existent) iCloud account. How do I know this? A client has a new phone, set it up with an icloud account, realised it should be on the same iCloud account as previous phone, deleted iCloud account and now has a bricked iPhone 5S. Two weeks on, after providing evidence of ownership and proof of purchase to Apple the phone is still bricked.

Fact 4 - A non Apple fact to show I'm not too partisan. Microsoft and Facebook are in tight collusion with each other. Why? MSN (Microsoft, the anti-Apples home page for new PCs) forces you to log into Facebook or with a Facebook account to place comments on stories. There are no other choices. Go straight to Facebook, do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars.

Fact 6 - If you rebuild a PC with Windows XP, (yes there are good reasons to do so sometimes), you cannot get it onto the internet to download updates, the latest version of internet explorer or to download firefox, chrome, flash and a raft of other items needed to get it updated and working on the internet. All those sites now use https, of a type not supported by WinXP, SP1 or possibly SP2.  Thank goodness for MajorGeeks.com, you can still download using non-flash, http based, straight forward links from there.

Like I said, an interesting week of learning. Well interesting for me but along the way maybe some snippets of info that might help someone else stuck with one of the scenarios shown above.

I ditched iTunes a long time ago and just use my iPhone without it.  After they changed the format and made it into a gigantic beast which sucked up all your resources and required quicktime to run.

Just a pain, I now have spotify loaded on all my devices and get premium free because of Spark.  Thanks Spark.

yeah there's no longer any need for iTunes unless you're syncing offline music, don't trust cloud services or fixing a failed iOS update

You could have an up to date, as far as that can be said for XP, installation disc by slipstreaming SP3 and an update pack. You could also use VLK to OEM to use one disc/image and set it up for the correct OEM license post-install.
