KiwiNZ: Not directed at anyone but these types of threads no matter where they are always remind me of the lyrics of a certain song....

"Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way."

We all make mistakes, I remember the last time I did.  It was a rainy day in 1991 .....

One that really grinds my gears is the word sort - as in "This is a great property in a highly sort after location". I can't point you to one pacific example, but if you Trawl (troll?) through the Trademe property listings you'll find dozens of them.

And I cringe every time I hear someone say "youse" in a business setting ie "Have youse guys completed that report yet?"

And also when people start their sentences with "and"......

I am trying to erase "anythink and nothink" from our kids' vocabulary. Neither their mother or I have ever spoken in such a manner so we can only assume they've picked it up at school. Its unfortunate your not aloud too beat such grammar out of them anymore.

Just reading back that last sentence in my head was incredibly difficult.

When stuff like "youse" is used intentionally as its trendy, suppsosedly, I'm ok with that, but when all of these examples are used unknowlingly, and a matter of course, it doesn't make the education system stand up. Maybe the three "R"'s should have an increased focus.

There is nothing grammatically incorrect with starting sentences with "and" or "so".

Hand in hand with "youse" is TIDday.  As in "Is that all youse want TIDday".

Replace above words with it's and allowed.

I was being facetious. The correct sentence in full is: It's unfortunate you're not allowed to beat etc.... I also used pacific in the first paragraph on purpose.

A lot of people these days probably think that "grammar" is what one calls either one of his/her parent's mothers. tongue-out

The trouble with picking out errors in grammar on forums is that you invariably get something wrong in your own.

My favourites are when people totally butcher well known sayings & idioms. I was at an indoor netball venue once where there was a sign misstating "For all intents and purposes" as "For all intensive purposes"

mattwnz:One that gets to me though,  is 'their' and 'there' , as many people don't know the difference.

That's one of my biggest gripes. Friends who I consider intelligent make this mistake all the time, usually on Facebook. It really grinds my gears, lol.
