dclegg: Here's some we watched and enjoy, along with the services we watched them on (just in case you need help finding them) :-

Friday Night Lights (Netflix, Lightbox)
True Love (HBO Now)
Life's Too Short (HBO Now)
Derek (Netflix)
True Detective (HBO Now)
Vikings (Netflix, Hulu, Lightbox)
Moone Boy (Hulu, Lightbox)
Parenthood (Hulu)
Better Call Saul (Netflix, Lightbox)
Modern Family (Hulu)
Nashville (Hulu)
Empire (Hulu)
Boston Legal (Lightbox)
The Goldbergs (Hulu)
The Almighty Johnsons (Netflix)

You say you don't like American politics, but as you also have The Newsroom listed (which I find very political), I'll also suggest

House of Cards (Netflix, Lightbox)
The West Wing (Netflix... I think; was a while since we watched it)

Also we've not revisited it to see if it still appeals, but we used to watch Weeds (Netflix) when it was first on TV. As it's from the person who wrote OITNB, it may also be worth checking out.

Great list. West Wing and Newsroom are my all time favourite shows, and Sorkin also did Sports night which is older, but truly outstanding, I highly recommend.
Goldbergs is awesome

Almost any Danish series, like Borgen, if you value quality television.

Definitely Brickelberry, if you value really bad taste.

Binge-watched Grace & Frankie on netflix over the last 2 days.
ALL the actors in it are brilliant.

Oh yes if you have not watched Firefly series, you got to.  It is really good in a nerdy way.

Caught the first episode of Rush on Freeview.  Shows some promise for a lazy Sunday night, and a solid 7.5 on IMDB.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I have tried watching many TV shows, but to me, the majority of them are poorly scripted and acted (imo).

These are the ones I have watched and quite liked:

Breaking Bad
Ray Donavan
Outlander

If I remember rightly, The Newsroom was well scripted.
