mdooher: Two things about Outram:
1.  Not Gigatown, actually not Megatown either, your internet will be lucky to get into the Kilobit speed range
2.  It is lovely and quiet. I live in Mosgiel and am in Outram most weeks.

Four things about the climate in Dunedin:
1. No Cockroaches
2. No Ants
3. No fleas.. ok I saw one once
4. You will not need to turn your heatpump to "cool'

All GREAT points.

Actually Blurtie, I haven't read what kind of lifestyle you want. Recommendations of where to live are kind of pointless without knowing whether you want the party life, the quiet life, or the bogan life. No point in moving somewhere poncy if you want to have a leer up without getting constant grief from the neighbors.

Hey, you can get all of that and more at the Outram pub!

@mdooher Haha thanks for the heads up. will def not miss the ants/cockroaches up here. The mother in law baked a mean bacon and egg pie for us once, we left it on the kitchen bench for a few hours to cool down.. when it came to dinner time, ants had totally infested it. I was devastated!

@andrewnz somewhere in the middle. I'm in my mid 30s so sadly I don't party as much as I used to, but in saying that I'm not ready to retire just yet! As mentioned previously, we're pretty much city slickers, so prefer being closer to town than out in the sticks..

Based on what I've seen so far, Roslyn and Opoho seem like our ideal suburbs..

Brighton is not too far and it is a nice place to live.

The beach there is great - it's not 'just a beach front'.

If you're up to it, there is likely a few rental property available there. Trust me, it is indeed nice. It's only 20 km away from the University. It'll be good for kids growing up over there.

Cheers for all the comments/advice/suggestions so far guys.  Really appreciate it!

Would still like to hear from anyone that has done a similar move, how they managed the move, movers they've used, whether they recommend them (or any other movers), if they would do things differently etc.

Cheers

All i can say is we used crown relo, and some random people in random trucks came and then the stuff would have been moved many times into different trucks. Ie they just sub contracted everything!

Wouldn't it be great to be put in one truck door to door, wouldn't that save money!

Check with Conroy removals. They did an overseas move for me a few years ago and had good service from them onshore. Offshore was another matter but that was not directly in their control.

Only if you have enough stuff to completely fill a large truck.  Containers are the best option if you don't want people handling your stuff.

If you get moving insurance, make sure your movers inventory what they pack.  No inventory, no cover.

Where to live - Maori Hill and Highgate are nicer areas that are within an energetic walk of the campus, but outside of the student suburbs.  There will still be the odd student, but they tend to be post grads or mature students.

I lived in Dunedin for close to 8 years.  I still miss many things about it. The climate is not one of them.

So just to follow up on this thread, I've now arrived in Dunedin!

I have to say the weather has been a lot warmer than I thought it would be.  Although it is variable, some days are warm, then the temp can just shoot down the next day.  Very different to the sub-tropical Auckland climate I got used to.   I don't miss the warm muggy nights however.

We managed to find a place to live in Belleknowes after viewing a lot of dives.  It got quite depressing!  We move in in March, and will be after suggestions for an ISP and have set up a new thread here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=191873

As for the move, we had to book two separate moves for our Auck and Wgtn stuff with Allied Pickfords and came in at a reasonable price of 3.3k for both (2.6k for 14m3 for Auck, and 700 for 5m3 for Wgtn).

Have been getting around Dunedin a bit over the last few weeks and it's a nice lil city to walk around.  Everywhere seems to be no more than a 10min drive. With non-existent traffic!  Very happy with the move so far!

Thanks again to all for the kind suggestions and comments!

Don't get used to the weather.

The last week or two has been very very unusual for Dunedin, I can't remember the last time it's been like this.

Also be aware if you are getting fibre to expect a month delay unless your property already has it

Every summer is like this in Dunedin, warm for a few days and then a day of overcast/rain before warming up again and repeating the cycle

February is always better than December/January and then in March is starts getting cooler (and living in Mosgiel, I start seeing frost on the windscreen of the car)

Welcome to Dunedin by the way

Thanks for the heads up.. Being originally from Wellington, I'm used to being disappointed when it comes to summer...

Yeah, am expecting a delay. Looks like i should have ordered DSL first, as I need an internet connection to work from... Whoops...

It cost us 5k to move Chch to Auckland... enough to fill a 2.5 bedroom place.

We were ruthless in throwing out old junk too!

Chch to Dunedin was 4k, so moving from Auckland to Dunedin will be closer to 7k I'd think?

Re: where to live.

I lived in Mornington in Dunedin and it was nice enough. It's certainly not walking distance to the Uni though, it's bus or car territory. If your partner is VERY fit, she could try biking up the hills, but really High Street takes a bit of an effort!
I wholeheartedly recommend living somewhere with SUN! The best places get year-round sunlight, those that don't are dark, damp and generally not good for your long term health.

Most housing in Dunedin is quite old, with garaging somewhat of a rarity.
