Aredwood: Do they have a washing machine or dryer on the deck? As some models will beep when a load is finished. And will keep doing "reminder" beeps as well until you unload them.

They probably do! Well, not a dryer, going by the multiple clothes racks on the deck, but maybe a washing machine. It's definitely not that kind of beep, though, it's an ear-piercing "chirp" that sounds identical to a smoke alarm with a low battery. And it is every night from about sunset (except Saturday), all night, for the last couple of weeks. I just wondered if anything else made that exact noise.

Hmmm that gives me an idea, I have an unused Smoke Alarm, I could put an old battery in it  and hide it in brothers house hahahaha it will drive him nuts.

Seems your not the only one in the world:
http://ask.metafilter.com/26636/What-the-hell-is-causing-that-beeping

The night time is big clue, I suspect printer/some electronic machine they turning off at night at the wall if it's not a smoke alarm (which could just be in storage or a draw?) going off due to lower temp at night.  Are you sure it's just not heard in the day due to more sounds about, Saturday was a stormy night remember, ahhh was kind of a warm night I guess?  What suburb is this in out of interest?

It's definitely not going off during the day - well not on the weekends, anyway. And it's always quiet when I leave for work around mid-morning. I'm in the Glenfield/Bayview area of Auckland. I think Saturday night was warmer which is what helped spark the awesome storms.

One thing I've learned from all this... it's solved the mystery of why my own smoke alarms always seem to run low on battery at 4am. I thought it was some sort of universal conspiracy to ruin my sleep, but it turns out it's just because that's when the house is coldest :o)

LOL! I will do my best. I don't think the ladies speak English so I am waiting for the older guy to show up. He's the friendly one. The younger guy just scowls all the time. Trust me, I want to get this solved as much as anyone :)

And the verdict is... Smoke alarm :) I saw the guy out there this morning vacuuming the deck (I kid you not) so I went down with a new 9v battery in my pocket and asked. Turns out they'd never had one that wasn't hard-wired before, so didn't know why it was beeping. It died completely this morning, apparently. I offered him the battery but he said they were okay. He was quite interested in my SunGenie solar system, so we had a bit of a chat about that, too.

So, problem solved. They've even tidied the deck up a bit. That usually means they're about to have a big party, lol.

It's probably in case the commercial printers or dodgy electrics catch fire :)
