No reception round here.

Data can come from wifi as well as cellular, so not sure why they would be irrelevent. Also the great thing with a mobile phone is it goes with you to other places, not like those stupid landline phones.

Living on the top of a hill we are lucky enough to get a wireless connection from a mast in the distance but you need line of sight. There are plenty of people who are in dips or behind hills who aren't so lucky and still on dial up.

However it's a lifestyle choice. I'd rather live where I do with a slow but usable internet connection than have neighbours.

Apparently Elon Musk is launching a whole lot of low alt satellites that will use LiFi ( light) and lazers between each other.
So this might change the ISP model we have come to know and ....use

turnin: My pick is we will have to wear or carry some form of processor but the display will be somewhere between our current VR/AR attempts, such as oculus/hololenz and more 'straight to the eye technologies' such as googles new Magic Leap.
Wearables and clothes will be intertwined , gloves will be a big part of the UI
One thing is for certain that there must first be a massive increase in either device processing power ( and cooling) or much more bandwidth to the server, I'm going with local processing power because VR wont tolerate any lag and the data transfer for something like magic leap is going to be nothing short of staggering.

FWIW Google do not own Magic Leap, they are just an investor (from just over a year ago) just like Richard Taylor from Weta is

Magic Leap's headset has their form of Augmented Reality that they call “cinematic reality” via a tech that projects virtual images into eyes rather than projected onto a surface in front of them. They call that “Dynamic Digitized Lightfield Signal”

They've raised 1.4B US$ in less than 2 years, so pretty impressive for a company that is yet to show an actual product publically

Geektastic: When I was a wee lad at boarding school, we had a magazine in the library called Look & Learn.

I recall well a proposal in there for a lorry that could easily drive from the UK to the continent because the steering wheel, pedal box and instruments could slide from one side of the cab to the other.

Still have not seen that - and that would be a lot easier to do than hover boards or jet cars!

SJB: I predict that within the next 5 years someone in America will develop a semi automatic assault rifle with a phone built in to the butt and a camera on the barrel.

Didn't the last Beverley Hills Cop film already have something like that? Not sure if if I remember it right.

I came into this late and responded to some posts before seeing the rest. I don't know about AI but what will change is the interface. It may take more than 5 years but my vote is for a direct neural video feed and thought control. Bionic telepathy from a few implants and control of everything via the Internet of the future.

Trump kinda reminds me of Greg Stillson, the bad guy in Stephen King book The Dead Zone, if you've read that one.

Nitpick but barring a constitutional change, Trump can't be starting his second term in exactly five years. He may have won it (sort of, there's a fair chance the Congress won't have counted the electoral college votes yet, and perhaps other stages won't have been completed), but he won't be starting it until the 20th January 2021.

I am sure Smartphones will die but 5 years doesn't make sense to me. May be a good 10 to 15 years time can bring AI in the market.
