Something more realistic, love to goto Europe for a holiday, never been and really want to visit Colditz Castle in Germany....... but money is the hold up. 

 

Couch surfing and house swapping is big here. At least, a lot of people in my circle travel this way, it removes the accomodation costs and if you know the people well, you can also swap cars etc. I'd suggest you see if you can find a house in Germany that needs sitting and you can trade your house in New Zealand that will need sitting? Some people want to go on holiday and experience life as others, rather than live in fancy hotels... I was in France a few months ago and the tourist in front of me was trying to ask for a trip around the suburbs to see how regular folk live. The tour guide understood his English request, but she kept trying to talk him out of it and refered him to hotels and malls etc.

Give it a go, somebody can help you realise this.

We use a website that puts sitters and home owners together (I can share if you PM) when we travel. With three dogs, good kennels are expensive for longer trips so we have someone come and live in the house and look after them here. The sitters come from all over and often have back to back bookings for months or years in advance.

One couple a few years ago were a retired USMC Lt Col and his wife, a preacher. They had sailed their yacht to NZ via the islands, then sold the yacht and spent a year in NZ house sitting consecutively, then moved to Europe and did it there for another year and then returned to the US! The whole time they were away, their houses were let to tenants so were making them money.

Think microlight rather than PPL... costs about half as much, and the medical standard is basically "can you drive a car".

For those who still think a microlight is a hang-glider with a lawnmower engine... modern microlights are every bit as capable and reliable and safe as a GA "certified" aircraft. In many cases, the exact same aircraft can be registered as either GA or microlight.

Become a pilot.  Cant due to bad eyesight.

Half as much as a large amount is still a large amount.

Gone are the days of bashing about in a Thruster for 45/hr that's for sure.  

Even in a Dacron covered machine like a Coyote you won't get much change out of a hundred an hour realistically, and most clubs have moved on now to more modern machines.  Down here the current going rate at CRAC in a Tecnam is 125/hr, plus 30/hr for instructor time, and the remaining Coyote is being replaced with another Tecnam.

Unfortunately, yes. Cheapest plane round here (Feilding) is a Drifter at $95/hr. There's also a Gazelle at $100/hr. Tecnam's are $130/hr, but no charge for instructors. I'm wondering how CRAC can charge for an instructor's time? Or does the instructor himself not get the money?

At microlight prices, I can fly enough to keep safe & current. But at $220/hr for a Cessna 152, I'd do half the flying. So the extortionate prices for medicals charged by CAA would get divided into fewer hours again! And that's just going to get worse as CAA divides their bureaucratic costs into fewer and fewer GA pilots.
