Yeah as others are saying, it's not that it's necessarily overly difficult, but the difficulty is in the ambiguity of determining what they're actually asking for.

It's poorly worded.

Questions like this, especially when forming part of an assessment, annoy me.  It's rude and insulting to present a question in such a vague manner.

blackjack17:

I got this one wrong

my interpretation was the objects passing through, theirs was bouncing back

As for the OP's question no idea

Why would it bounce back? of they are actual objects then they would not have overlapped, so they must just be abstract mathematical symbols, they should continue on their merry way... the cops answer is wrong

This explains a lot.

Last cop I met didn't understand the difference between instantaneous velocity and acceleration.

When quizzed couldn't even provide a suitable unit for acceleration ...

I really wish I had named this thread "Are you smart enough to be a cop?".

How about this one?

I chose my answer because the 4-sided shape was divided into 4 equal parts, so I went with the answer that was a 3-sided shape divided into 3 equal parts.

But it seems the actual answer is something else.

I chose the last one (with the vertical line) as I thought it made the resultant shapes symmetrical (like the one you chose). The one they chose would be the third of my choices.

Seriously?!!

So, many, questions?

What's with the ambiguous questions, that can be answered (correctly) in multiple ways, each with a different answer.  It's just plain dumb if the question is not specific enough for the candidate to know which way you want it answer.

What's with using that as an assessment for a police officer?

How big is an ego to think that those who 'get it right' are the ones who magically think like you?  It's as if you're screening out the smarter ones who can recognise that there are multiple potential ways this bad boy could be approached.

Plain weird.  Someone was paid to create this rubbish.

I would think the answer should be a triangle with lines terminating in the middle of each side and meeting in the middle

Supposedly they made the standards for becoming a police officer lower because there was a shortage of officer, would hate to know what the old test was like.

Maybe if you can pass the test you are over qualified....

You are all missing the point.  The right answer is whatever the police say it is, because the police are never wrong.
