The petition is proof that in this world, there are those that would complain they are on fire, and there are those that would complain that someone is trying to put it out (the latter is usually the ones whom are offended by anything and everything and can be found on the front line of every picket / march on offer).

Its an unfortunate series of events / circumstances that lead to the death of an animal, but if the choice comes down to a human (and an innocent 4 year old child doing what 4 year olds do, climb and explore) or an animal, then the human has to win every time.

Should the parents have paid more attention, perhaps, but having had x2 4 year olds, they are fast little buggers and even the most watchful of parents can't prevent $h1t happening.

Should the enclosure be more secure to prevent a child from entering, almost certainly. Its happened before although I think this was a female gorilla not male and it seemed to obey its command to return to the den

Are either solely to blame or free from blame, no.

Watching the footage, the gorilla seemed confused, dragging the kid through the water like a play thing initially but then he seems to realise that its / hes alive and stands guard over him. Now the footage I've viewed is only a brief (30s) clip and I'm sure there is more there which may show different behaviour.

Its horrible that the call had to be made, but ultimately I think it was the right one

I agree with the gist of this. I've got 3 kids, and even with 1 you cannot keep eyes on 100% of the time. And, kids are quick. They seem to have an uncanny knack of knowing when they can sneak off without being spotted. A momentary distraction, and pow...they're gone -- usually they don't tumble into a gorilla pit thankfully.

I see this as an unfortunate accident, noone really to blame. Zoo's have these new view friendly enclosures -- it could happen at auckland zoo too.

Probably 6 billion people have visited a zoo in the last 10 years -- one kid falls in and suddenly there is some huge problem with either parents or zoo enclosures.

Once again an innocent animal is killed because humans are to blame.

1. Because the mother wasn't watcher her child.

2. The enclosure wasn't secure

In my opinion and a lot of people will get angry at this. The gorilla is more important than a human life, there are billions of humans and very few Gorillas. Allowing the Gorilla to survive gives us a chance to increase their population.

But as always humans are at the top of the food chain and nothing else matters....

On this logic, we should wipe out a bunch of Indonesians for the benefit of Orangutans, Indians for tigers, Chinese for pandas, NZers for kiwi, Japanese for whales, English for badgers, Americans for bison, ... In fact, we should kill enough people to make the human species endangered.

you could ban Zoos but then most of the endangered animals that are left would disappear from their Habitats . Zoos these days are there to make sure animals dont die out and have some of the best breeding programs going and the only reason they let people in is to raise some income so they can keep going , and i would say in most zoos animals are no longer kept in boxes in fact they live better than they would in the wild, they have to if they want them to breed.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

While everyone is getting excited about poor parenting, how about those Japanese parents who abandoned their 7 year-old son in the wilderness to punish him for throwing rocks? He has now been missing for three days and there are suggestions he might have been eaten by a bear.

I believe a poster in this thread linked to a CNN piece that had a commentator urging people to layoff the parents and the zoo. The commentator made what I thought was a very good observation: what about the role of the usual "Let's record everything, gawk and scream" crowd who was busy filming what would ultimate amount to a snuff film of the last moments of the animal and the boy's endangerment? There is some conjecture that some of the noises made by this crowd also aggravated the animal. Where are the petitions to charge these people?

And where is that mob that is supposedly so concerned about the welfare of the animal and (to a much lesser extent) the child and their protests over these social media snuff films?

Sure, ban Zoo's, then half the animals in those Zoo's will be extinct within 5 years.

There is an argument to be made that that Humans shouldn't interfere with species being made extinct, but a counter argument to make that we are responsible for a huge amount (or an amount in vary amounts depending on who you believe).

You have taken what I wrote completely out of context, I am not saying that we should start "wiping out" people. 1 person vs the possible extinction of a species I would vote to protect that species.

This case is no different than a shark attack in Aust. Humans are swimming in a sharks habitat and get attacked and its somehow the sharks fault and it needs to be hunted and killed. When will us humans learn that we are NOT the only animal on this planet, instead we would rather wipe out forests because we are greedy and kill innocent animals because we want to be able to do anything we want and feel safe.

Once we lose a species its gone forever, we never seem to miss what we have until its gone.

Great vid showing a enclosure. Zoos cant be expected to make it 100% child proof. It requires deliberate actions to get in. See how those adults jumped in with ease. Of couse a child will get in if not watched.

I was referring to the clips of groups protesting against the killing of the Gorilla. I should have been more clear during my rant!
