We could get all those super secret government jets diverted away from their chem-trail duties to do water bombs for a while :p

But in seriousness, it is an unusual feeling, driving to work as if its a normal day, only the view to the port hills showing massive amounts of smoke. Similar to the events of the quakes, my own "daily routine" was not altered one little bit (which is fortunate I guess) so its like being a spectator and/or watching it happen "somewhere else".

Im sure the firefighters are doing their damndest to get things done. There will be a review, hopefully no fingers get unnecessarily pointed but if improvements can be made, then all well and good.

I'm talking about the ones who are always playing the victim card, not the actual victims of the fires. There are always people like that in Christchurch. They don't even live in the risk areas, but they want to blame someone else, instead of actually do something to help the ones who needs support.

Do you have proof of this or are you another arm chair professor who is throwing out remarks?. IMHO if you have to start a sentence that could be seen as damaging to someones reputation with the word "apparently" you are better off not saying anything at all until you have proof.

Some people had to get out really quickly. I was talking to someone where I work, & their family only had enough time to grab their passports and a few clothes. Their house is prob O.K. I think.

I feel a poster here has an issue with the EQ here. Doesn't want to hear whining from ChCh people about EQ or now, the fires.

No,, we won't be whining about the fires for 6 years just as we didn't whine about the EQ for 6 years . We whined and talked and supported each other, as would any other NZ community. Talk to the media if it's boring.

I heard they were evacuating Westmorland on Wednesday while I was heading back to Chch having been out of town all day. I was turned away at the bottom of the hill by Police, and told that there was to be no access. I parked, and then quickly ran up the hill avoiding the Police busy turning people away. As it turned out, we were ok to stay once home, but had it made very clear to us that if we chose to leave then it would be a one-way trip, so we stayed put for the duration. While a lot of houses would have had to have burnt in order for the fire to get to us, the wind was blowing it in our direction, and we wanted to be there to deal with any flying embers should we be unlucky enough to catch one.

While it worked out ok for us, if we'd done as initially told and not returned home on foot then we would have been locked out from Wednesday until late Friday afternoon with no opportunity to rescue anything, and only the clothes on our backs. I know others in that situation.

I'm certainly NOT moaning about the effort that went into putting out the fires (once they got organised and properly on to it), but I do believe that lessons can be learnt about the necessity for clear and full communication to those who are impacted. The other key lesson that I hope has been learnt is that ANY fire in dry grass and scrub should be taken extremely seriously, and dealt with immediately with full force. Such fires are not "contained" until they're OUT.

I can only imagine that the poster who complained about moaners from Chch has never lived through earthquakes or fire, which are not instant events, but periods of stress that run on for days, months or even years. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

I heard it summed up nicely one day by a radio DJ, just after the Feb quake "there are people that will moan that they are on fire and then they'll moan at the ones coming to put the fire out". Unfortunately the NZ media seems to latch on to these people like vultures and thats all that gets reported on, not the 99% of the population that gets on and quietly deals with the situation. Unfortunately, news stories about every day people doing every day stuff doesn't seem to make the headlines......

If that's a reference to the Chch quakes and the way many felt they were treated by EQC, EQR, and insurance companies, I'm confident that the "moaning" by many was well and truly justified - regardless of the opinion of typical gormless "hate radio" jocks.
