Fred99:

A waste, but also a selfish gesture and p1ss-poor example for other (particularly younger) people, and downright cruel to his wife (incl ex) and children.

Written by someone who has obviously never had depression.

sad you don't realise what depression does.

It does not change the fact that suicide (in those cases) is not a solution, and hurts others.

I'd like you to retract your comment that I "don't realise". I do - but you'd need to trust me on that.

Unfortunately, people who commit suicide often aren't of clear mind, and therefore decisions made aren't rational, logical, or balanced. They might realize it will hurt their family, but their mind would trick them into believing it would be best for the family in the long term.

I suspect long term drug use would play a part here (yet another reason not to legalize drugs).

I don't dispute that, but most people with a mental illness aren't suicidal, not all suicides are the result of mental illness.

We have no idea what Chris Cornell's problem was - we may never find out.

Great care needed not to make heroes out of "tormented artists" - in effect normalising suicide "it's what they do".

Mental illness is a great big elephant in the room.  I was at a funeral for a suicide victim recently, he was mentally unwell, it never got mentioned at all.

Closest was mention of lack of understanding why "he decided".  He didn't - an illness killed him.

I agree with your comments about artists. I think mental illness is what we should be talking about, though I find the term itself makes me cringe.

It would depend on the mental illness as to whether it killed him or not, in my opinion. Some people can still choose. Just like someone with terminal illness can take thier own life because they don't want to suffer the pain or effects of their illness (and in some cases I can completely understand that). But in those cases one wouldn't/shouldn't claim the illness killed them I don't think.

I do find suicide selfish, in so far as it robs the family of a chance to say goodbye (unlike an illness induced one), or understand the motives and in some particularly poor choices, children (young) have found said parent) which I find utterly unacceptable.

He was prescribed for anxiety a drug called Ativan which in rare cases is a significant disinhibitor.

I suspect long term drug use would play a part here (yet another reason not to legalize drugs).

He grew up in a neighbourhood with easy access to drugs and quit around age 14. Interviews say he began using drugs after the breakup of Soundgarden (97). Oxycontin is mentioned, don't know if he was prescribed it.

I feel that a discussion of drug legality is out of place in this topic.

Suspect all you like. But, in reality, you have no knowledge whatsoever as to what drove him to take his life.

So totally irrelevant to link this death to the debate on drugs.
