CPU mining is pretty terrible, probably not worth your while unless everything is free like power etc.

I think monero might be best option for CPU mining I am not sure though - I would guess you would get more out of a single rx 570/580 than cpu mining with a 24 core xeon...

Can older Radeon cards (7850, 7950, 7970 etc) be used for mining these coins?

Is there any value in such cards?

The 7950/7970 can, it's just the low performance relative to the high power consumption isn't really worth it.

As for cards like the 7850 or any card with 2GB or less VRAM, they will likely have reduced performance (or not work) because the DAG is larger than the VRAM.

All those splashing out for mining machines to mine Ether - just be aware of the possible impending Proof of Stake hard fork, which would effectively make your mining rig useless for Ether. Will be interesting to see which coin all the miners go to when/if this happens though (litecoin anyone?).

Ive heard a range of Ethereum POS dates of 1st Nov 17 through to early next year? Is there any evidence of a concrete date anywhere?

Re the DAG size is there anywhere that predicts when the 3gb size will be hit?

I've got some 3gb cards but will switch those to zcash when they cant handle DAG sizes or the POS which ever comes first.

I used to have a spare PSU to run my second 660Ti, I bridged 2 pins on the 24 port connector. Cant remeber what ones they were but google will enlighten ya.

Yeah I have one of those also but I have to time the manual switch on of the 2nd PSU and I CBF doing that and want my rig to be a bit more graceful lol, thanks for the tip though

I thought this article was pretty interesting.

Proof-of-work blockchain transactions (e.g. bitcoin) are apparently destined to doom us all as they gobble up the world's electricity. Proof-of-stake blockchains (forthcoming on ethereum) are apparently much "greener".

What will save us? Why, there's a blockchain solution to facilitate p2p PV energy trading of course!

Proof of capacity, burstcoin, has been one of the greenest solutions for the last couple of years.
