A species is defined as indigenous (native) to a given region or ecosystem if its presence in that region is the result of only natural process, with no human intervention.

Stu: It's actually believed the breed seen here came to NZ from Australia a millennium ago. So if the Purple Swamp Hen (as the Aussies call them) came from Australia, how are they native to NZ?

Species that arrived here through a non-human cause are considered native. Those only found here are indigenous.

So for example we have spur winged plovers which self introduced last century from Australia where they seem to be native. So although a pest (noise) they are protected.

Also mangrove seem to have self introduced about 30,000 years ago.

The lines will blur as climate change mediates the self-introduction of species.

When a sea snake washed up in Northland it was treated as an invasive species and destroyed.

In the case of the Pukekos I suspect they predate any human movement between Aus and NZ.

If you are talking about plovers they could have come on a ship. From memory of my Buller's Birds of NZ book they were first spotted on the St Clair golf course in Dunedin sometime during the 1930s.

So I called DOC and they confirmed they couldn't/wouldn't do anything on private land to manage Pukekoes and advised getting in a suitable Pest Control firm.

Haven't found anywhere that offers a no-kill removal service yet, so might resort to some "scare"devices along the fence line and bush to see if I can upset them into moving on without freaking out the chooks or cats too much.
