I am sick to death of the excuses for bad behaviour that go around. A damn good whipping, strapping or beating is in order here nothing less, they are called consequences.

It seems there are a bunch of assumptions being made. This could have been a bunch of art students or similar bohos looking for some street cred for all anyone knows. What exactly was tagged on this occasion?

Edit: not that the 'tag' or whatever is necessarily indicative of who done it.. but anyway..

You are reacting to something I didn't say. I'm talking about the decline of social standards that results in this kind of behaviour. That can't be fixed with violence. It goes back to communities and the way kids are raised. What you are seeing today is not the result of what happened yesterday. It is the result of what happened 20 and more years ago. It took a long time to get to this point, and it will take a long time to turn it around. That said, I think it is ridiculous not to confront these losers about this behaviour. I agree that there should be consequences. Otherwise the morons who do this kind of thing are just being encouraged.

The publics apathy in events like these is disappointing, but sometimes it takes one person to take the initiative and confront idiotic behaviour before the rest of the apathetic people make a move.

I've had a couple of instances that I had to deal with boorish behaviour.

1st was on a train in western Sydney in the early 2000's, where a belligerent passenger thought it was cool to light up a cigarette. Despite all the looks of horror and disgust, no one went up and asked him to put it out. So much for the Aussies sense of fair go.

So after a couple of minutes of no one doing anything, I went up to the bloke, and asked nicely if he would mind putting it out. He got a bit foul mouthed about it, but in the end he did as he was asked, and I got a round of (hand) claps for my effort. I think that annoyed the smoker even more :-). I would hope if things got physical that some of the more burly commuters would have stepped in ... I'm a skinny runt :-)

2nd time was 8 years ago at a local restaurant at Red Beach, where fairly intoxicated person wandered in and ordered a curry, and sat down to eat. He'd obviously pre-loaded, and was getting more intoxicated by the minute, and was hassling a group of seniors that were out having a nice and quiet dinner, and myself and my son. The manager tried to placate him, to no avail. Meanwhile this guy was getting more obnoxious, and several times I asked him to tone it down, but he was pretty foul-mouthed. SO I grabbed him by the scruff of the shirt neck, and moved him out of the restaurant, and told him not to bother coming back. The seniors profusely thanked me, and my meal was on the house ...

No worries. I just don't think it is helpful to talk about shooting people, which is what I was initially reacting to. Trying to understand why anti-social types do things is not the same as accepting it.

It's not apathy. It's self defense.

Cardiac surgeon who told public off for smoking. He's now dead.

Man who tried to break up a fight. He's now brain damaged.

Good Samaritan who helps out in an accident - gets sued or robbed or assaulted.

The list goes on.

Tagging 'gangsta' or the like on a train\fence\whatever isn't art, it's just petty vandalism

However, not everyone in an alleyway with a spray can is a tagger either.

The idea\concept of Street art is quite popular in cities such as Melbourne, and to a lesser degree, Wellington

I never said I wanted the taggers shot or dead or anything like that. I just was surprised that the train staff seemed powerless to do anything. I also never said they were cowards either.

As to jumping in and stopping them myself - they were on the other side of the train (not the open door side), so I could hardly leave my two boys unattended while I jumped off, ran around the entire train to stop the little thugs, could I? It's not like I had much in the way of self-defense myself. But thanks for helping out and branding me an "armchair warrior" instead of being more concerned about the safety of my boys - I'm guessing you were you there and witnessed what happened?

American here, they would not have been shot. Contrary to what the media and movies would have you believe, America isn't the wild west, and people certainly don't go around shooting people all the time. Yes there is crime just like every other country, and yes some of it involves firearms, but I lived there over 30 years and never saw someone get shot, or even pull a gun.
