The free membership of the Lower Hutt library gives me free access to.
Yeah, I've been using this for a while too. It is a pretty nice solution and means I don't get ads on devices with no ad blocker. :)
I avoid the NZ Herald because the website looks awful, and they always have a breaking news banner for some ridiculous story. I would pay for digital ad-free access to Stuff/The Dominion Post, but alas there is no way for me to give them my money.
They are in a race to the bottom. Before long they will be like some of the tech review sites which have a review split over 37.5 pages with huge intrusive video laden advertisements. I have zero sympathy for them. There is also a lot of subtle censorship going on in the comments sections. Criticism of central government and councils is hardly moderated at all, while any comments about companies who advertise with them has to be a lot milder.
The NZ Herald website has been unusable since they moved to their new site design. Page loads are 10 -15 seconds (and normally at the high end) on a mobile device which probably makes it the slowest website on the entire Internet.
It means I simply don't look at it.

Interesting you say that, because I noticed on most articles the comments section is no longer shown (or available).

Long long long overdue. If it had been introduced years ago and persevered with the maybe the journalistic talent wouldnt have left the building. If the NY Times (a Murdoch company) can show that a paywall can start to gain traction then maybe there is hope beyond the dumb-downed clickbait we're left with.
And the sooner that Stuff introduces a paywall the better - both for journalistic content and the hope that it doesnt disappear completely. The degree of profit decline at Stuff is alarming. Almost as bad as the profit decline at TVNZ. NZME is a bit like Mediaworks in that the only thing keeping some companies afloat is earnings from their radio businesses.
The NYT is not a Murdoch company. It's between 70% and 90% owned by the descendants of Adolph Ochs who published it in the 1890s, 17% owned by Carlos Slim, and 13% owned by the Sulzberger family.

Sorry, I was talking about the Stuff comments sections, did not make that clear. There is no way I'd pay for Stuff either. I can see what would happen is just like Sky TV. At first there were virtually no ads and then over time they got greedy.
bah, Just hope everyone else doesnt move up to paywalls given they all want to but too scared to for obvious reasons.
If one moves, the rest will now consider it then it becomes a level playing field like broadband providers....thus we all go chasing the best deal on paywalls.
fun.
I think we will all end up simply watching/listening to free to air sources.
Maybe I should stop complaining about the Stuff site. I just had a look at the Herald site and as others have said, it is terrible to use, even worse than Stuff's.
I actually wonder if anyone at the Herald is bothering to even look at their page before uploading/updating it. Case in point, count the repetitive headlines:

Do you reckon a star of "The Vicar of Dibley" has died at the age of 53? How many times do we need to be told about it? And they want people to pay for this? I hope not.

I deleted it from my book marks after they went to that godawful site design. Load times are ok on a UFB connection.
