AA Insurance seems to be writing in welly still - tried them?

Is the Kaikoura earthquake embargo still in place after nearly two years? It must be a nightmare for people buying houses, especially new builds!

Earlier this year I went to arrange contents insurance with BNZ and the embargo meant that they had to get special approval to offer more than $10k of coverage.

The faults that hit chch in 2010/11 were not 'predicted', but the threat of a massive alpine fault earthquake was well known long before 2010, and reflected in the building code and the way infrastructure was designed.

I find that hard to understand. chch has had big earthquakes before - e.g. the Cathedral got its tower knocked off a while back. We also know that being built on swamp any major quake, like the alpine fault, was likely to try to turn us back into swamp. And I'm not a geologist or even half way educated in these things - but I knew.

We also live on a dormant volcano - Lyttleton harbour and a few others, which points to us being on some type of fault line or lines.

Where as Wellington - grew up there and earthquakes were expected, along with flooding in the Hutt, land slips on the highway to Wgtn and road issues in the Rimutakas when bad weather hit. I'm not sure how granular you could be as the whole hutt valley and Wgtn had isssues of varying types. I remember wading down the main street of Silverstream until it got too deep - with floods etc.

Less. I heard 10,000 years as one estimate for the Greendale Fault. But there is Feb 22 fault, unknown faults.

That's what they told us after Sept 2010 then we had Feb 2011, Jun 2011 etc etc etc/
