We have friends who went, for family reasons not choice.

Food is cheaper, mostly.

cars are cheaper, running costs are not.

So some things are, some not.

Jobs well both have a massive downgrade in what they do there now. Yes the pay rate is higher there than for the same job here.

Planning on staying and becoming a citizen? Fine.

No? Remember the hassle of coming back, in particular the pension saga.

Doctors, having to pay medicare is NOT cheaper. In Auckland you can pay $17 for a GP. If you care to choose on price.

And of course hospital is free, unless you really want to pay Southern Cross or whoever for the same treatment.

Husband uses the free chemist here for prescriptions. Not high use, free, regardless of how many items.

I think you need to do some better research. There are only 100k people in Brisbane that are born in New Zealand (2016 census). Even if Aussie born 'kiwis' are included, you are going to get nowhere near the 500k mark (which would be about a quarter of the population of Brisbane).

For me there are two things that made me move from Brisbane to NZ:

Non protected NZ citizens have no automatic pathway to become permanent residents and therefore citizens of Australia, with one exception.
The NDIS. 0.5% of your salary goes towards the National Disability Insurance Scheme. However if you are a non protected NZ citizen then you (and your children) cannot claim against it. Must be the only insurance scheme in the world where you pay the premium, but cannot make a claim.
Costs are generally cheaper in Australia, than in New Zealand, even after taking the currency conversion and lower GST(10%) into account. The two major exceptions is drivers licensing (AU$177 for 5 years vs NZ$44 for ten years) and car rego (but then petrol is taxed a lot less than in NZ), and electricity. They also don't have blistering fast Internet (unless you live in a FTTB/FTTP area), but it should still be adequate for normal household use. Mobile plans are really cheap compared to NZ.

Public transport - like with Auckland - depends on what areas you live and where you need to get to, however I found it much better than Auckland.

That's really the problem. If you go there under the special category visa you're setting your kids up to live in a country with no permanent residency where the government will treat them as expendable. It's highly likely their rights will be downgraded potentially either forcing them to move back to New Zealand or lose out financially or both.

And you can't online shop where you want to ...

Yes, easy to get around but the fact it is there in the background ...

AFAIK, there are no video games available in New Zealand that are not available in Australia. The states and territories changed the laws about 5 years ago that allowed the purchase of R-rated games. As for blocking websites, the only sites that are on the list are known piracy sites, and this is done by rights holders (mostly Foxtel and Village Roadshow) and not the government directly. There are 20+ countries that have similar laws (NZ doesn't -- yet), so it's not unique to Australia.

The more concerning thing in the ICT space is the Data Retention laws, which allows a variety of agencies metadata information from your online activities (e.g. the people you call/txt, the e-mails you send) without a warrant.

I assume this is in reference to Amazon (US) not shipping goods to Australia. This is a decision of Amazon, and not in (direct) relation to government policy. The government intend to charge large volume overseas sites selling goods to Australia 10% GST. However, the New Zealand are intending to do the same too.

One just about killed me. Was in rush-hour traffic through Sydney, had just picked up a friend from the US at the airport, he's in the back seat and pipes up with "hey - do you have huge spiders in Australia", to which I replied with something along the lines of "aaaah - yep.... errr - why?" to which he replied "look on your sun visor". Holy %$@. I belted the beast with a clenched fist, stunned it and sent it flying onto my wife's lap. She's much braver than me, but was still screaming with terror, also throwing in "WTF did you biff the bloody thing at me for". Had to stop and block traffic while we searched the car, caught the monstrous thing and released to to the wild. Drivers we'd held up seemed to be quite understanding - "WTF you doing mate?" "%^&^ing huge spider mate" "Ohhh jjjejessus mate - good luck".

This is how horror movies start.

My wife was contemplating a move to aussie after getting married. I made the case that NZ, particularly Auckland may be expensive, the weather may not be as fine and dandy as Gold Coast, but you dont have to worry about waking up to a killer <insert beast here> in the middle of the night.

As much as I am for Animal rights, against animal cruelty etc, Spiders, Snakes, Lizards and other venomous critters, should either exist far inside the wild, a zoo or not at all.

Dont get me started on mozzies (why do they even exist?)

Back on point to the OP. Aussie is good, for a holiday. If you find Auckland too expensive (I dont blame you, it is outrageous to even think about owning a home sometimes), considered Wellington, Palmy, Christchurch even, Hamilton or other centers.

NZ as a whole is amazing place to live. Auckland, maybe not so much.
