Yes. 10 year build. Thats 2028. 17 years. That in itself will be what it will always be known by, which is a pity. I like my idea of a mini Central Park for the Square.

There is a cathedral in Europe which has been under construction for over a century, so this will be a fast build rebuilt compared to that.

I do recall that on some TV doco.

Work on the church, which was designed by legendary Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, began 131 years ago, in 1882, and continues to this day. At the time of Gaudi's death, the church was approximately a quarter finished. It is expected to be finished in 2026, on the 100-year anniversary of Gaudi's death.

The cathedral is a pastiche. I see no particular heritage value in it. It's a bad design for the location that has been seriously damaged by multiple quakes. Proof that what works in England ain't so flash close to a major fault-line.

A corrugated iron bach has more heritage value IMO - kiwi as, fit for purpose and has a certain rugged aesthetic.

Most real cathedrals around the world took at least a century to build - some took several centuries. Even then they got neglected or parts fell down or were desecrated - so they were added-to, restored or renovated. Unfortunately Christchurch is not quite in that league.

Its not really meant to be in any league. For a start, NZ is not old enough. But its a landmark for here, as is the AKL harbour bridge, Welly's Beehive, Dunedin's Octagon. SFO's Golden Gate, NYC's Empire State/Statue of Liberty.

Its a trademark of ChCh. We can't be in any league if we were populated from 1840

Instead of walls consisting of two faces of hand-cut dressed stone with a rubble filling, they will have two faces of machine-cut dressed stone with a poured concrete steel-reinforced filling. The structure and amenities will have to conform to the Building Act and the fire regulations. The new building will be nothing like the old building except that it will look the same: if it was a faithful re-creation it would never get a building permit.

The same comments could be made about the design of the cathedral as it was. Gothic Revival / Neo Gothic - it was designed to look as if was a heritage building when it was built.

Plonked right in the centre of town, mainly to intimidate Catholics.

That’s right but I really meant in terms of scale - which leads to the very long construction times I was referring to. Liverpool has a massive cathedral (longest cathedral in the world) that was only finished around 1978.

Had just walked past on Thursday and noticed it looked suspiciously clean! I'm surprised at what good condition the pavers seem to be in underneath all that, I guess everything was growing on top, not through.
