I have a bag by High Sierra, which I find very useful. It has laptop sleeve, two main compartments and a bunch of other compartments for different things (e.g. sunglasses, phone etc) including a couple of little compartments on the shoulder straps. Also has strap and lumbar padding, compression straps and a waist strap. Very comfy and adaptable to various load sizes
I bought it at Briscoes in 2007 cost about $100. It's proven to be very well made. It's had a lot of use and abuse and is still in good nick. I can't see the exact model for sale anymore.

I use a Targus laptop backpack. It would happily fit everything you described.
+1 - that's my daily driver
Great bag. Very versatile and fairly light weight when not fully loaded.
I carry a 13" Laptop, 9.7" iPad Pro, Kindle, Chargers, Cables, accessories for all of the above gadgets and keys, wallet, sunglasses, headphones etc.
I'd get another in a heartbeat.

My daily driver is this Thule: https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/computers-tablets/accessories/thule/thule-tcbp-317-25-litre-laptop-backpack-black/276030/
Been good for the two years I've been using it. The laptop sleeve, and seperate tablet pcoket are quite handy (Laptop in one, Kindle DX or iPad (or both) in the other).
I have the backpack mentioned in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8stUe9Vo74
they sell them on a website in NZ but I got mine from amazon.
It already has a felt lined section for a laptop and the pocket at the front which MKBHD syays is for a phone is actually felt lined to hold glasses (I keep my regular and/or sunglasses in there). Isnt crazy expensive, build quality is fantastic and it has lots of pockets for storage/organising.

Apologies. Try this.
Looks pretty nice for a fairly reasonably priced backpack. Can't remember if you're in Wellington, if you are and it's no good maybe I'll take a look. With a toddler I barely have time to look at all the links people have so helpfully provided and compare them, though I'll try tomorrow. Link removed too.

Too many options!!! Thanks all for your thoughts, I'll have to set aside some time to review them all.
I think start with determining how many Litres of capacity you require.

True. My current bag wouldn't quite fit into a 10L bucket because it's slightly wider, but overall volume is maybe 15L. That's a great place to start with the filtering, thanks.
My choice would be something from Tatonka.
I have been using their rucksacks for almost 20 years and I am impressed by the quality, durability and practicality.
They are by far the most comfortable, well padded straps, padded and ventilated back.
I have their Magpie for days when I only need a small amount of stuff as well as a Zaphod which is a big daypack and another one that converts between a rucksack and a small case that fits carry on bag rules on the meanest airlines.
You can get them from amazon in the uk or germany for the best choice and prices.

Buy a Tom Bihn. Then you'll realise that in fact there are no other options...!
