I was scrolling through Apple Music mindlessly in bed the other night and stumbled on a Christmas album by Seth MacFarlane, of all people.  Funny thing though, it's GREAT!  He's got a superb voice for singing swing and jazz and is accompanied by a full jazz orchestra (probably the Family Guy orchestra).  I'll be playing this on Christmas Day in the background, always looking for anything that can replace the traditional Christmas music.

Sold! I love Seth's voice and the swing style he favours...it'll hit my Xmas playlist immediately

Whilst it isn't a Christmas Movie, I watch The Shawshank Redemption around Christmas every year (usually because it is on TV).

Die Hard (and DH2), and I quite like The Santa Clause (the Tim Allen one).

Watched It's a Wonderful Life last weekend for the first time - that is a great Christmas movie too.

Songs, I'm pretty easy, so long as I get to hear Snoopys and Fairytale of New York at some point. This year we've just been asking Alexa to play some Christmas music, she does pretty well.

My Wife's favourite (thrashed) Christmas Album is Christina Aguilera's Christmas album. It's pretty good.

Christina Aguilera (and in fact Britney Spears) both have very good voices. I heard both accoustically recently as part of something I was watching to do with music. They have both have good ranges and power.

Not too fussed on the music, usually my wife takes care of that.

The classic Xmas movie in our house is Home Alone 1 & 2, I never get tired of them. Our kids are too young to enjoy them just yet. Love Actually is obviously a classic.

"keep the change you filthy animal"

Same here with Home Alone 1 & 2....  (got the saying on my Nerf gun wall from the movie  ) tongue-out

Love Actually is wife xmas movie

I'm a big Die Hard fan, but for me "Its a Wonderful Life" is the best Christmas movie.

the greatest, greatest Christmas movie of all

Movie(s)

All the classics, but most of all:

  • Love Actually
  • Home Alone

I also enjoy watching family/home/handycam video at this time of year.

Music

For recorded/commercial music, generally vocal acapella/acoustic:

  • artist = First Call, album = An Evening In December, vol. 2, song(s) = all of them (current favourite is "Tennesse Christmas")
  • artist = Pentatonix, album = That's Christmas To Me

Something a little different:

  • artist = Falling Up, album = Silver City

Gremlins and the greatest Santa Claus story  , how they got that in a so called family movie is a mystery.

As a side note, I have to say that moving to NZ killed Christmas for me. It's such a non-event here and everything just feels wrong. It's also irritating because everything shuts for so long that you can't get any work done!

Totally agree. Been here over 12 years now and the feeling hasn't changed. May be something to do with the fact Christmas is tied in with the summer holidays.

We had a mid winter Christmas one year and that was better.

Best movie - Bad Santa

Best carol - anything from Phil Spector's Christmas album.

Home Alone of course....and not necessarily a Christmas movie but it always used to play on TV at Christmas time and I have great memories of watching it every year with my dad when I was a kid, Paint Your Wagon.  Great film.

Hate ‘Christmas music/songs’ - epitomised by Snoopy’s.

Love most old Christmas carols - eg. Once in Royal David’s City, etc.

Thank you for all the suggestions, new playlist started on spotify and movies added.

I'm a Love Actually fan. Watched it yesterday and still very enjoyable.

Here is a Q&A on the movie online today. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=12176708
