Fred99:

I wouldn't take it with a grain of salt.

Consumer tested a lot of toasters side by side, something I can't feasibly do, and I assume nor can most people.

Looks cool but sucks at making toast. who cares if it lasts for ever?

One thing is that there are two different models with two different types of elements. eg they look the same, but the element type is different. But I have never had any issue with the quality of the cooked toast on mine, although mine is the 4 slice one. I suspect the testing may have been  done with the other type of element system. Mine was using  older normal resistive wire type element. Also we don't know that it wasn't faulty. But I never found the cooking any worse any any other toaster I have used, and probably slightly better than the Zip.

I was raised with a 50's "Side Flip Toaster". You watched it like a hawk and if it didn't burn you whilst you turned the toast, it bit you when the spring loaded door closed. In the 60's my brother was an apprentice electrician and he cut his teeth regularly replacing the elements. Fun Days.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I used to have a Dualit. Ran like a charm for about ten years, then disappeared when moving house one time.

I bought a Breville - an older version of this one. I say older as I got mine three years ago and it doesn't have "fruit bread" or "bagel" settings like this one apparently does. It was on sale at NL. It toasts really well, and very evenly. You do have to slide the timer bar thingy about 90% of the way to the right to toast Vogels, but it does it well.

It's weirdly sensitive to vibration though. If it's left turned on at the wall, when I walk across the dining room floor about seven metres away from the toaster, the red timer LEDs all light up.

I wouldn't be surprised if the internals of many toaster sold these days, are very similar, and the main difference being the outer housing on them. But I don't think people are going to get decades of use out them, like with the older and more mechanical types. These days they have motors, cjips, lights, etc which are all potential points of failure.

Just seen this thread - Cylons were my first thought:

Image result for cylon toaster

Anyway - we've just got a plain old 2-slice toaster. Stainless steel jobbie, Breville I think and about 10 years old - goes like a champ. Can neither confirm nor deny if it was purchased in a Briscoes sale.

Nothing quite like fresh toast with butter and a large dollop of Marmite with a hot cup of tea...

I hope it's real Marmite, and not that Sanatarium muck.

Geektastic: Dualit all the way.

I have a red 4 slice one. They're easily repaired if required and the toast is actually better IMO - and I live on toast!

Did you get the full blown, old-school "classic" or the slightly more modern (and much cheaper) versions?

Full on clockwork hand made by Trevor!

Yes. They should be banned from calling the Sanitarium confection 'Marmite': it isn't.

Dualit had a black and yellow Marmite-themed toaster I still lust after!

We had 8 slice Dualit toasters at boarding school. Used to have competitions to see who could catapault the toast furthest across the Common Room by thumping the lever...

Ah, @alasta, yep - I know the real Marmite you speak of - it's called Vegemite.

Fantastic stuff!

Wash your mouth out! There is, like Highlander, only one Marmite!

If they are that good then perhaps you should buy me one!

networkn:

Be very careful with toast. There are guidelines that recommend toasting the minimum you possibly can.

The darker it is, the more harmful it is.

you realise that the same thing happens when you bake bread/cake, grill meat, roast potatoes, make steak, fire up bbq, etc ....
