It is absolutely possible - they need to only have loaded pricing incorrectly, or left old tickets out, or experience a technical issue. It happens to my past and current (retail) employers so why would Foodstuffs be any different. Again - anecdotally, I have receipts from NW where it clearly says my Clubcard number but the pricing has not been applied, and yes they were surprised by this.

Also I understand how Clubcard works and I appreciate it's by design that scanning  Flybuys or Airpoints card doesn't get you the discount. I was mentioning it for people who aren't aware and also pointing out I think it's a stupid system.

It would be incredibly rare for a price to be loaded incorrectly, if it's a store without ESL then you could have an old ticket still up, but that's going to pretty quickly show where the problem lies. In a store with ESL it's pretty much impossible to have pricing not match (well there are a couple of scenarios, but they involve major human or technical issues and would result in thousands of prices being wrong).

People only scanning Flybuys or Airpoints cards is pretty much non existent - literally 99.9% of people who scan a loyalty card use a Clubcard.

The sad thing is I went to a store in the USA in 1985 (yeah spot the Boomer) and they did this but better again. You scanned then went and paid all the while without taking anything from the shelf or store. Then off around the mall and did the rest of your shopping. At the end, there was a drive-thru with your box of all the items ready and they put in boot. At the time lets say this backwater kiwi was very impressed.

Was this at Tomorrowland or something? When I shopped in US supermarkets when I lived there you had people writing out cheques to pay for their groceries, and in more recent years EFTPOS terminals where you signed with a stylus in front of the operator, no self-checkouts in sight.

(my emphasis above.)

Pak'nSave Lower Hutt last month.

I tried to buy two items that were priced at $69.90 on special. Huge big posters offering the discount and a stack of the items in a prominent location.

$110 bucks each at the checkout.

Airpoints and New World are both of the opinion that I should not be allowed to have a card so I am a bit stuck. (My postal address does not appear on their list of valid addresses.)

The cynic in me feels that pretty much all self-service and automation being put in by Foodstuffs and Progressive are about cost-cutting.

It is absolutely about cost-cutting.

NZ has the one of the highest minimum wage's relative to the median wage of all developed nations -- Maybe only Chile is higher. And, the next labour/green government want to boost it by another $2.00/hour.

So, expect to see low wage workers replaced by automated system's, sooner rather than later.

Not to take the thread any more political than you already have - but is this because our minimum wage is higher than others or our median is lower? Median wage in NZ is pretty low - ranked 19th, where our minimum wage is ranked 7th. Says to me our median isn't where it should be.

And that's fantastic - but believe me when I say it happens. I'm looking at a receipt from tonight's New World visit where a product has cost me $9.99 vs the $8.99 Clubcard price, and I can see that I've scanned my Clubcard.

I'm sure the supermarkets try their best, no one goes to work to do a crap job, but the reality is that mistakes or issues happen. Pricing issues at supermarkets are in the media all the time so clearly this is not a one-off (I'm also not saying it's a rip-off, or deliberate, or a systemic issue - simply the nature of running such a massive, complex business).

I'm not arguing the minimum/median should be higher or lower. They are what they are.

Just saying, increasing the minimum wage incentivises automation.  At some point in the future, AI will be smart enough to entirely run supermarkets. Although, will the supermarket still be a thing by then? Who knows.

Print this one and use it for your New World Club Card discount

No it's not mine (not that you should care anyway, all you want is the discount), it's the tourist card AFAIK, some dude posted it on reddit a couple years back.
