Automating the water heating costs around $250 including electrician. It takes 6 - 12 months to pay back for us. We use hour of power in morning for heat pumps and water heating, plus everything else. Evening can work as well, we sometimes do evening HOP in summer but didn't bother this summer.

We got a quote for solar, thinking that might be an answer to a similar problem.

It’ll take 7-10 years to pay itself off according to the calculations. My wife is very resistant however because she doesn’t like the “ugly” panels that would cover much of the roof.

I think she’s presently happier to pay the bills.

Does she often stand outside looking at the roof or something? When the roof guys asked me what I wanted on the roof I only was concerned about what the cheapest was and that was zincalume without paint. I dont see it so dont care about it. Plus most of it is under the solar that I also never look at other than occasionally to see if it's dirty.

I and the same thought - it's on the roof, who cares what's up there?

Women care. They look at things, guys tend to care more about function than form.
