We have burned through a few. The old style one lasted - Probus, Made in England. I probably grabbed this from a pak-an-save on the way to a tramping trip a few years ago. A little bit off topic from the hacks.

Got chrome plated golf clubs with rust spots? Crumple up aluminium foil, shiny side out. Dunk in water and wrap around the shaft and rub up and down. It wont scratch, it will take off the rust spots and the alu will fill the micro spots from the rust spots. Works a treat

Use less than half of the shampoo you usually use - down to as much as a third but wash twice. Probably applies to any kind of soap and washing up.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

tehgerbil:

Vinegar in your washing machine, softens clothes, cleans your washing machine, helps reduce odour and a few other things. Cheap as chips for a 2L container too. (This is to supplement your washing powder)

Citric acid is even better and I think even cheaper!

De-solv-it is great for removing all sorts of sticker residues, marks etc.

Also good for loosening sticking plasters from skin. Found this out when removing 14 sticky patches from hairy back and chest after an ECG.

If anyone doesn't know about De-solv-it, go and get some now. It's amazing what that stuff will clean up, and I have no idea how it does it without being packed with toxic solvents. It's like the Japanese glue that effortlessly glues PE and PP, it shouldn't exist but somehow it does.

I’m surprised by how many people I see doing things like cutting vegetables in ways that increase the risk of injury.

For example, if you cut down the length of a carrot to create a flat surface before placing it on a board to cut into slices, there is far less chance of the carrot moving and the knife finding fingers instead.

Put a teatowel under a chopping board to ensure it won't move. Don't use blunt knives, they are far far more dangerous than a sharp one.

Don't leave the handles of your pots pointing outward, kids and adults can knock them or grab them causing horrific injuries.

If you don't have De-Solv-it to hand you cna also try copious amounts of Doom / RAID insect repellent. Seems to soften the glue so that you can easily wipe it away.

Loosen ice cubes in a tray by pouring tap water over the back / underside of the ice tray. Ice cubes will fall out after one twist instead of several.

Have an air compressor available in the garage

Makes cleaning, drying & inflating various items super easy.

“Cleaning, drying & inflating various (inflatable) items”? Say no more. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.

And if you've got the space, keep a plumber and an electrician out there as well, you never know when you'll need one.

You have to catch them first! (Almost harder to find than a Moa!)

Eucalyptus oil. I always keep a bottle handy for removing any sticky residue of plasters, labels and especially good for clothing after sitting on bubble or chewing gum. Natural and smells nice too.

I've used few drops on a small cloth at night on the chest of anyone coughing to help ease it. The fumes coming off help, pretty much like Vicks if you don’t have any. (Make sure not allergic).

Useful as an insect repellant for anyone not wanting to use stronger stuff like deet and can be used on pets.

Trade me has a Home Essentials brand for $5.79 for 25ml.
