Windows Home server v1.

This has served me ( ha ha ) for nigh on 15 years doing exactly what was said on the box.
PC backups, which you could then backup to external USB drives. Able to recover from where your last backup was done, OS and all.
Media and document storage, across multiple disks (JBOD), with folder duplication across separate discs.
Again, able to backup to external USB drives. Did some neat trick with only backing up the file changes, but was able to copy files in their entirety from the last backed up directory.
Easily recovery from a failed disk. Just remove from the pool, put new disk in, add to pool.

Recently retired WHS, as it was overworked. Some processes were hogging HDD activities to do with balancing, but not too good on nearly full drives.
Wouldn't support any thing greater than 2TB hdd, and only supported 512 byte sector allocation.
Yeah, and insecure. No access to internet

Retained most of the hardware, except an ailing disk, added extra RAM.
Replaced with W10 and DrivePool, and some FreeFileSync macros.
So far looking like a good replacement

I have to say my latest was the m2 macbook air (base model). Great little machine, the battery life is great, i have yet to leave the house with a charger, no issue with a full day of work getting done on battery. I just wish my role at work did not depending on windows tools as I would swap over today if I could.

I'm just happy that you can use GeForce NOW on it to play your steam games etc

Sports watches. Having metrics such as speed, distance and cadence is hugely valuable in manging my running and swimming training.

I forgot about that! I used one of those for maybe a decade, until maxing it out due to the 2 TB limit. Now I have a Synology with 36 TB, and it gave me the low space warning the other day...

Was also an enthusiastic supporter of WHS v1. Went to WHS 2011, but it was never the same. Have also been using a Synology NAS now for some time. However my original HP MediaSmart Server lives on, with the addition of a VGA interface at my son's house running some version of Linux - so can't really claim it as my old tech in the other thread.
