Whats the deal with these smart meters and 3 phase? I am going to be chaning the property here over to 3 phase soon but noone at geneis energy can tell me if they can do it in one hit with a smart meter that can do both since I dont see the point in them paying to change the meters once, and then me paying again soon after to have it done again.

Normal process is if Genesis is doing your area, you might want to wait until they do, and advise them that you want to do 3 phase. You'd then wire the property up as 3 phase, then get the Genesis guy to put their meter in, then an inspector would need to liven your site. So it is a bit of a juggling act, but most of the time goes real smooth.

That's an NGC/AMS Smart/Advanced Meter. NGC are rolling these out for Genesis, currently in parts of Central and West Auckland area at the moment.

If you're requesting a new connection eg building a house, with Genesis as the retailer, you'll go straight to an advanced meter.

where are you paradoxsm?

I might call AMS re the 3 phase thing tomorrow.. oh its my day off, maybe on Monday.

bugger all really it's just a more compact unit, controller and meter all in one instead of controller behind it with vanilla meter on top

That first meter was in Wellington.

THIS one is a weird prepaid system that was in a house I was helping clear out for sale the other day, apparently the tennants always had their power cut off.

This meter is in Auckland and appears to have a GSM modem in it. There was apparently a control panel inside which had coloured lamps when your credit was running low would go from green to orage to red.. This system does not have a daily charge so they would be very handy for places where the usage is minimal (beach houses) but they seem to only be installable in the low-socio-economic areas of auckland.

SmartMeter

(the ICP number is obviously a phony)

They will not do the prepaid power in beachhouses - which is why powershop and their loading of the lines charge to the unit price is such a good option for them.

Hell, they wouldnt even change my friends granny flat to prepaid power when he asked since it was on the same site as the main house and for some reason they wanted them both to change or neither...

The only thing smart about these new meters is how fast the power companies will be able to charge more when you use less power. Watercare services in Auckland have shown how easy it is to do that. Use less then pay more.

Good thinking, as I had dismissed powershop for my own house, I hadn't considered it for the beach house (not that it's built yet)...

Looks at powershop... not in that area yet. Oh Well.
