For a heat pump, I guess it also depends on where you live, and, how cold it gets. I believe the energy star readings were tested at 7degrees, therefore, at higher temperatures it would be more efficient. There's a new standard that means that it must be efficient at 2 degrees as well (at a lower cop than H1). The colder it gets in your location, the better "burning stuff locally" would be.
Something that you can't do with gas heating is use cheaper off peak energy to pre-warm the house. Some places you can get day / night electricity. We intend to go to a day /a night plan and have the heat pump come on at 6 or 6:30, while the power is 10.37C kW/h to preheat the house, then it can maintain the temperature throughout the day.
We have a large villa in Parnell. Moved in over Xmas and could see it would be cold. Got quotes from all three suppliers, Braemar,Brivis and Vulcan.
Knew several who had the brivis and seemed to be best in Aussie. 5.1 star rating.
Did whole house, all rooms and got 20 watt 11 outlet systems. Great ! Fast and does totla house.
Thought it would be expensive to run but as we run water and cooking it added $150 per month extra... Using it every night till 11 pm. We set it quite average.
Recommend it over heat pumps as they are cheap to run but do not heat total house !!!! Air cond can be added also or used as fan in summer-four room changes per hour of air...

Interesting to note our gas bill goes to $50 in summer, then $150 winter, for nightly use. My brother put three heat pumps into his five bed house, wellington for about $10,000.
Still only heats three living rooms.
If you have 3m plus roof heights reticulated is a must. LPG bottles NO, as I have used them also.
thanks for your feedback Con. I'm hearing good things about the Brivis so i think i would be comfortable installing one.
for the Brivis system i'm looking at - its going to cost less than $9000 to get central heating to the entire house. (HX23i furnace, 98% efficiency, 5.8 energy star, 23kW capacity and able to support more than 15 outlets )
the first person i spoke to about a "whole house" heatpump system suggested I was looking at a cost north of $15000. i pretty much gave up on the heatpump option there.
if the cost to install heatpump is indeed $6000 more than to install a gas system, thats a lot of ground for the heatpump system to make up. $6000 buys me some 90,000 kWh of gas.....!
Great. I had about five quotes. Not many wanted to do deals. Our brivis was slightly less in spec at 5.1 points, but with 11 outlets cost $7000 all up.Other quotes ranged $8500 to $9500.
