meesham: How about it's a safe place to live and raise kids, an easy going lifestyle, great summers, skiing in the winter, amazing landscapes, the cities and towns aren't overcrowded (coming from Singapore I'm guessing this will be a big plus for the OP) and those are just the reasons off the top of my head.

I'm originally from Australia and have been living in NZ for a few years, I originally just came here for a visit but I wouldn't live anywhere else now.

Singapore right now has an unbelievably large percentage of foreigners. Around 50% of the population is foreign now. I am pro immgration but what is worrying is that almost all the migrants here are from third world countries, we are not attracting first world migrants. And the overwhelming majority of them are illiterate or near illiterate, they cannot even speak or write to a Singaporean Primary one standard.

Many of them are Malaysians or Chinese and the informal sectors here is almost entirely Chinese speaking now. So you have the store fronts, menus, all in English but the waiter or sales assistant can't even speak a word of English. It is amazing really.  This immigration thing has gone very wrong, and they are still looking to import another 1 million immigrants without any mandating any English tests. Jeesh. We are giving out PRs and citizenship to migrants from third world countries who are not even literate to a local 5 year old standard.

New Zealand has immigration too, but at least migrants have to speak English and fit in, not the other way around. At the end of the day, Singapore is only 20km by 41km. It is always nice to have a change of environment for a few years, have some variety in life. I am sure NZ has lots of crappy things but at least it would be a change of scenery for a while.

As for salaries...NZ's salaries are not that much lower anyway. It is harder to find skilled jobs but I can make do with what I earn. I also don't mind paying more taxes if I get a social safety net and free healthcare in return.

chiefie: I have to agree with beuno99, Singapore and Malaysia are both bumiputera (multiracial) country and all different races and cultural are well mingled and been living and sharing in good harmony. Something that many countries are still finding difficulty to mix well.

Anyhow, I've been living in NZ for 18+ years, studying high school and university and tertiary study. And my work experience has only been in NZ, and never had the experience of working in Asia (market).

You have to be clear that Singapore and Malaysia are vastly different countries. One has English as its main language, is secular and has good law and order. The other has Malay as its main language and is less safe and orderly.

Racism has always been strife in Malaysia. You mentioned bumiputra, you might want to google that.

@Beuno99, I apologise for mistakenly referring to the term "bumiputera"...

Oh last I checked, Bahasa Melayu is the official/national Singapore language with English and Mandarin largely spoken as well... For someone who live and born in Singapore, you should know that fact! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore

Anyhow, as @nakedmolerat highlighted... and I couldn't help but to think that you are exhibiting the typical arrogant Singapore-trait... Anyhow, I wish you good luck in applying for a job in NZ... I have said what I think will be useful for you to gain your PR but I'm not going to tolerate a Singapore "kiasu" behavior...

Good luck.

i think that's china who got hong kong back from the empire a few years back ... Cool singaporeans still live on trees ... ok ok no they dont but their (ex ex ex) prime minister wants to live forever. ok ok my 2 cents -

it is not racism at least not explicitly and you have to understand unemployment rate is high due to state of the economy. wellington christchurch and auckland is highly multicultural esp auckland is filled with asians.

it is very difficult for an employer to gauge a foreigner's skill level - they don't understand what A levels is, they dont know what a "BSc" constitutes in another country, they find it difficult to assess them, and worst of all they can't understand them! Kiwis have a strong accent and Singaporeans and Malaysians speak too fast for them, mainly because they enunciate with emphasis on the 'wrong' syllable which throws off the Kiwis - one advise speak slow and don't try too hard to pronounce words. and finally: CV. Kiwis are simple - a one page CV with every relevant Skill spelt out and supported by obvious evidence you'd be miles ahead of someone with a complex obviously superior 13 page CV.

i guess if you know what you skill set is then these guys at GZ can help set you up with the right people ... good luck!

In Singapore, Malay is the national language for historical reasons, probably 80% of people in SG don't speak it. I think you are the typical person who doesn't know anything about countries in SE Asia yet has the cheek to start spewing. Now that is arrogant.

Me arrogant? I will take that, along with a big mac and large coke, thank you. Oh yeah, keep the change.

First off, you don't know me so don't go around saying that I don't know anything about SEA... But I know enough of what a typical Singaporean trait, and the super-KS behaviour after many years of living so close to that country, and for sure not all Singaporean that I have known, exhibit this, so it is a generalised opinion, however I have seen the typical Singapore arrogant behaviour in person.

Anyhow, let me share something with you... Not many, and I reinforce that... not many Singaporeans would want to live in NZ, that's a fact from many Singaporean people that I have met and interacted with in my years of living in NZ. Many of them criticised NZ being "backward" compare to their beloved home country, many prefer going to Sydney because it is so much more like "home"...

Once again, I wish you good luck with your venture to migrate to NZ or finding a job in NZ, after all.. that's what you want to know when you first started this topic.

<laughs> Well, I guess I only know one thing about Singaporeans, but I do have something in common with the PM. I also want to live forever :)

Getting a visa is a pain, but I've found it's worth it to get the right person, last time we interviewed around 10 people and only found 2 good candidates, one needed a visa which we arranged for them.

Being in the country is a must for interviews as others have stated unless you are a god within your field.

Unless I've missed it there has been no mention of what industry you're wanting to work in? I am assuming 'IT' of some flavour, but that's an assumption.

Over half (I haven't counted, but it's way over half) of the developers/testers I work with are not of NZ birth. Most from Philippines, then UK, a couple from Sing,

In general I'd agree with the comments above - you'd have to be here, or have to be offering something very special. Make sure you point out that English is your first language, otherwise those vetting CV's may assume you have had it written for you. I've been burnt before by very good applications, then an applicant who shows for an interview and I can't understand a damn thing they say.

What an interesting topic title?!  You are worried that you might be discriminated here in NZ and if you read your post carefully, you and your comments are racist and discriminatory towards your so called "third world country migrants".  Geez.

um arent Bumiputra the local people from the malay archipelago?
Thats if i remember my geography!

I dont think malaysia is as harmonious as you seem to think.  The bumiputra seem to get a pretty much free ride over there and impose their islamic law on others, this sorta thing doesnt go down well particularly when the others are the main economic powerhouses of the country.

Not trying to cause a ruckus.

You might find a little racism here but generally it is fine.  As someone said, your main hurdle will be getting prospective employers to take on the hassle of a work visa etc.

Good luck!

Yep..  you pretty much summed it all up correctly.  Free education, job priority, homing priority, status...  and they even get a 15% discount on whatever property they choose to purchase!

interesting comment there. however, that is NOT true. i suggest you go to the borneo island (majority bumiputra is in Sabah & Sarawak). most of them still have no access to electricity and general needs. free-ride? Surprised

also, have a look at the rich list HERE. can you tell me how many 'bumiputra' make to the rich list? are you sure that they control the country's economy?

muslims in malaysia do NOT impose islamic laws on others. islamic laws are only for muslims. in fact, i have not seen any muslim countries in this world that do impose islamic laws on non-muslims. malaysia is very unique and it has both civil and 'shariah' court. shariah courts (islamic court) do not supercede the civil court.

in malaysia, education is FREE for everybody? no?

15% discount on whatever property? hahahaha. last time i checked, most bumiputras family have minimum of 6 family members in their 3 bedrooms home.

you should not mislead others or make false statement. that is not very nice.

It's funny that you linked to the Wikipedia page that says: "The Singapore government recognises four official languages: English, Malay, Chinese (Mandarin), and Tamil.  English is the most dominant language in Singapore, unlike neighbouring countries Malaysia and Indonesia, where Malay is the dominant language."

I'd guess that makes English the main language according to your source?

now dont get me started on this racial business it's so stuffed up it's not funny. every race thinks the other races are getting a bigger bite of the pie and there is certainly tension, stemming from the most harmless racist jokes to fatal violence. you cannot say there isnt tension.

secondly, bumiputera means heirs of the land. who were in malaysia first - orang asli (indeginious), malay (who came from indonesia in the 1400's when parameswara became a fugitive in singapore after committing murder), chinese, indians, dutch, british or who? who cares! the fact is "bumiputera" status entitles you supremacy over "the others". but the status should be given to the orang asli, who are true heirs of the land, who unfortunately haven't managed to learn how to spell, buy land or tell the difference between rape and consensual relationships.

for the bumiputera advantageous, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumiputera_(Malaysia)

article 4 of http://www.sc.com.my/main.asp?pageid=750&menuid=867&newsid=&linkid=&type= states bumiputeras must own at least 50% of every public listed company

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketuanan_Melayu

finally while education is free it is not equal. non bumiputeras who score maximum marks get denied university entry... and dont forget 80% of university (inc medical school for example) spots are reserved for bumiputeras ...

http://educationmalaysia.blogspot.com/2006/05/scholarship-quotas.html

now look you can't create everything equal - not in the USA, not in Australia, not in New Zealand. but to believe there is equality, democracy or freedom of speech in certain countries (eg fiji, zimbabwe, malaysia ...) is fooling oneself.
