Exactly. I know a few Ford and Holden guys, they can debate their cause, and actively too, but it doesnt reduce to name calling and bitterness, like it can do with phones. Thats what spoils some of these debates. Not all sink to that level, just the vocal minority.

Nokia has missed the bus, too slow to innovate, if they have innovated. Win seems to be a credible option but again, too slow to join the market. What is good, is that the two main players will evolve together. A perfect example of competiton in the market if ever there was one. iPhone4 to Galaxy becomes iPhone 5 and Galaxy S2. One arrives first then the other takes it on, then the next update, that is all good for the users, whatever their poison. The only disadvantage is a possible duopoly. Methinks they won't compete on price, as they both dont want to turn two $1100 devices into two $900 devices to compete. That is actually illegal, but not in this case as its not an agreement, it will just be this way.

Interesting times.

I consider myself a fanboy. However for me it is a personal thing, I never would advise someone to buy my favourite brand just because I like it. It's more like supporting my favourite team for me.

Just like everyone else I absolutely hate trolls and distance myself in getting in a debate with one.

I was sitting at work the other day using my Android phone. A colleague started telling me how much better iPhone's are and that my Android (Galaxy S2) was merely a poor man's iPhone etc.

I laughed and asked him to explain exactly why he thought what he did. The only thing he could come up with was "iPhone's are just better."

As he obviously had such an in-depth knowledge of products, I asked him what model of iPhone he had. He doesn't, but he's going to get one...

The one drawback with this is that it may (and sometimes does) result in products being released to market when they're not ready, i.e. bug-ridden and untested, and the (paying) customer suffers. E.g think back to XBox 360, XT network, T-Box to name a few.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

That's true, but they don't suffer enough to signal the vendors to stop. They encourage ever shorter cycles. The same is true in my neck of the woods. When telco A introduces product X on Monday, there are instant demands for telco B to match it by Wednesday. Of course there are going to be bugs. :-)

I'm not sure where to draw line between fanboy and religious fanatic. There's quite a bit of overlap.

Fanboy: Someone who feels himself superior to others by dint of his choice of computer hardware or software, often manifesting as preaching to and obnoxiousness towards others.

Well, it just seemed that way in the Linux vs Windows and ATI vs nvidia phlegm tossing wars.

I still come back to mindless insults.

I buy what I buy after assessing the points that interest me as a buyer. If someone buys the "other" product, thats fine. They bought that for what I assume are the same criteria, they chose their product based upon what they value. In terms of the classic iPhone vs a similar specced Android phone, well they are both great phones. I see the pros and cons of both. I am just a fan of my phone type.

The fanboys fight those who own the other product. Criticsm given that you like one of those, various putdowns, all in anger. Its all childish, and it works both ways. Its arguable why. Age related? Jealous? Justification of their purchase? Who knows. What could be an intelligent discussion over our opposing purchases, the pros and cons of both, how both will evolve in each new generation usually amounts to mindless agruments, where you have to decide, how do I respond to this? Or shall I go outside and look for some paint to watch dry??

Maybe its insecurity, having to fight to not be seen as a buyer of the No.2 product?

I'm Windows, iPhone/iPad, and nVidia. But I see the value of the Linux, Android and ATI. Whats not to like? You cant buy everything so like many others who havent won Lotto I buy one of what I happen to favour, as we all do in everything retail.

All the more reason to seek peace of mind in a tribe of similarly minded howler monkeys, patting each other on the back while giving others who chose what is clearly the product of an inferior brand a verbal smack-down.

I'm Windows, iPhone/iPad, and nVidia. But I see the value of the Linux, Android and ATI. Whats not to like? You cant buy everything so like many others who havent won Lotto I buy one of what I happen to favour, as we all do in everything retail.

I got caught up in the ZX Spectrum vs Commodore Vic 20/64 (Z80A vs 6502) and Amiga vs Atari spats in my youth. It was the howler monkey syndrome thing, and it just didn't occur to me that others could possibly have made a rational decision within the context of what they valued to go and buy the competing product. Those were not my proudest days.
