bazzer:
billgates: I rack up airpoints dollars now on mt credit card. $80 spent gets me 1 airpoint dollar and for every $250 spent I get 1 status point. You can swipe the card at any retailer or online anywhere. Much better than selective retailer schemes like AA or Flybuys IMO.

What card do you have? I get $1 for each $100 I spend with ASB, I find this more useful than airpoints dollars because I can use the rewards $s at a range of retailers that I actually use anyway (e.g. supermarket).

the 'how much do i spend for each reward $' ratio of ASB cards was pretty dismal last i looked.  westpac had the worst.  national bank cashback rewards was the best.  i'm happy with my bnz plat visa with airpoints because i also use the koru discounts and i fly.  if i could use an amex everywhere, i'd use teh amex version as the earning rate is better.

got to remember when evaluating the c/c schemes, to include annual fees, supplymentary card fees (if you have partner), and rewards program fees.  If fees all add up to $250 per annum, and you only spend $20,000 per annum on the card, and it takes $15,000 to earn $100 reward, then you were better off paying cash...!

I assume that the discount for Burger King (and a few others) still applies as there are existing non-rewards discount-only partners including Repco and Burger King. Details on which is which are at: http://www.aa.co.nz/membership/aa-rewards/burger-king/

I use a Platinum Visa to get Air NZ Airpoints, and an Amex - a very old account (from 1989), way before moving to NZ but got some good Rewards points, which I mostly convert to those $50 Westfield malls gift certificates. A few of those actually...

Used to have a standard Flybuys, but since last year I'm using the Air New Zealand FlyBuys card. Again, for the airpoints.

I used the AA points mainly to pay for the membership. Most of my discounted petrol comes from Shell, using the supermarkets dockets...

I just couldn't find on TelstraClear where to enter the AA number. Will have to call (I dread the wait on their call centre though).

Amex points are really good value if you can hold off and buy the vouchers when they're on special. I bought a bunch of noel leeming $100 ones a while back for 11000 points each (normally 15000). On their 2 points per $ spent rewards scheme that represented $100 back for each $5,500 spent.

Normally it would have required $7,500 spend to get the $100 voucher on the Amex.

The equivalent ASB gold visa required a spend of $13,000 before you could earn that same $100 voucher.

The equivalent Westpac gold card required a spend of $18,000.

None of these were taking into account annual fees, of course, and i did my calculations over a year ago so the earn rates may differ now....

TelstraClear being dumb again. Entered an email address in that form and now they've "created an account" for me.

Can't believe it. If there's an account number there, and the account number has an associated email TelstraClear shouldn't create anything.

Didn't have the "created an account" problem when I signed up but that was a few years ago. Hope this new account doesn't cause you any problems!
