TheUngeek: By nation wide brand do you mean Mag and Turbo? Pitstop? Midas? All of those places advertise brake work however you will hardly ever find a qualified mechanic there.

It is one of those (not sure whether I should say or not...) I have since been told by someone that these places often don't have fully qualified mechanics onsite. I'm thinking that once this issue has been fully resolved, I will pick a different place to go in future...

Internet diagnosis is very hard.
In all honesty no one here can give you the info you need without inspecting it them selves.
How far the wheel will rotate will depend on how much friction is in the gear box etc.
A 1/4 turn could be fine. Need to feel how much resistance is on it.

Having worked in the industry for some time including with suppliers for those places, I will not take my car to those places for anything other than their core advertised business.
IE Tyres for one, exhaust for the others. Even then you will find better work at locally owned places.

Thanks for the responses. I'll duck in on my way back into town and raise it with them. Like so many things it can be hard to know whether they're being honest or just trying to pull a swift one, unless you have some knowledge already. I can spot the bulls**t when I walk into DSE or Harvey Norman's, but I don't know enough about cars to be confident of calling them on things...

Final part of the story. Went back in and they put it on the hoist. The wheels spun free and he said that a little noise like that was common as the pads wore in. I got to have a look and was satisfied that all was fine. He also explained that the rotors we're too big at the hub, and we're rubbing against one of the clips that holds the pad in place.

I know it's not really related other than it's a case of a mechanics stuff up - an otherwise well-respected mechanic had managed to put a retaining pin on backwards or something hadn't quite clicked in right or whatever, and whilst my father was riding down the motorway, the drivechain on his (fairly large) BMW bike locked completely. He managed not to crash it and a short call and a few minutes later a very white-faced mechanic turns up in the ute and quietly takes the bike away to be fixed. This was years ago, I don't think he's had to pay for a service since.

I know just enough about car maintenance to know what I'm not going to try and do myself. Replacing an alternator, brake-pads or radiator? Piece of cake. Anything involving taking the rocker-cover off or beyond, and it goes to the shop. I'm not actually that keen on touching the brakes to be honest mainly because I find bleeding the system properly afterwards to be too fiddly.

I use Brendan Motors in Taranaki St Wellington and they've always been straight up with me, good bunch of guys.

A third recommendation for Brendan Motors - take the wifes car there for wofs and any major work I can't be arsed doing. Great bunch of guys, very upfront.
