SpookyAwol:

This one for example, has been the norm in practice for some time.

The  current rule should allow the red car to go first. It never worked in practice though. At least now its official in the new rules.

I have never seen the green car give way under current rules. Most dont even know that rule exists......

As others have said, most people won't notice this rule change as they either don't know or ignore the current rule. I once almost got taken out by a bus that failed to give way at a T-intersection when it was supposed to. The bus driver then loudly and very angrily abused me for getting in his way!

im wanting to upgrade my old car, can one of you who ignores the current rule turn infront of me in the next few weeks :)

i can see where it may save some confusion, if theres traffic following the green car for example odds are it will not yield right of way, and as pointed out, you will now no longer have to look to see if the red car has a give way/stop sign, but I can't see that there will be any material change to the number of accidents.

give way to the right is simple and easy to understand. if in a crash, your drivers door is going to be hit, odds are you are in the wrong, simpleas

sbiddle: While people may see the proposed changes as confusing you have to remember we are the only country in the world who works the current way.

Umm is Argumentum ad populum (fallacy of the majority) a valid argument though? Pretty sure the old chestnut "if everyone else was jumping off a cliff" that ya mum used to break out, applies here...

Yes the red car has the right of way currently. Who does that? Well most people I would expect, as they are the road rules. In practice I have come across some people who don't know the road rules, but most seem to follow that rule.

The red car has the right of way in theory. But since in Auckland the blue car will turn right without indicating first, the red car can never take advantage of the right.

That is illegal though, not to indicate. Wish there were more police policing that, rather than setting up these speed traps for making revenue. You can get quite a big fine for not indicating when turning, as well as not fully stopping at a stop sign, which many people don't seem to do.

I think this is a good change, but it took them far too long to do it. The ozzie state that used to have this rule got rid of it years ago.

Err... me for one!

If people don't know the rules, that's no reason to change them, it's a reason to better educate people.

That includes people who enter the country and drive on our roads with a foreign licence.

The new rules are much more logical, it seems the only people who think the current rules are better are those who haven't driven overseas.

I can see that if you just review the rules on paper the current rules could look better but in practice the new rules work much better and defiantly increase traffic flow at all intersections.

As for confusion during the change over I don't see it as an issue, if you look at other countries for example when Denmark changed the side of road you drive on crashes actually went down 45% for 2 weeks as drivers were much more cautious, after the 2 weeks accident rates returned to normal.

but the current system does help traffic flow, if you look at all those examples on the govt page, the person who will have to give way come 25th May will have to wait longer, the person who will now have right of way would not have a problem with traffic when turning, they dont need to wait a long time for a gap in the traffic. thats why the current system is good.

But nobody obeys the current rules, or at least vary rarely.

Here is the current rule, red car has right of way - who does that?

The problem with this one is that If I am in blue car, i Try follow this rule. I check to see if there is a stop/yield sign for the red car, if not he has right of way.

Why should I be checking if h has a stop/yield sign? I need to be concentrating on possibly looking for pedestrians or cyclists etc..

If I am in red car, I never expect to have right of way

I agree. Thought about writing something longer but too confusing.

i honestly thought the red card only had right of way if turning out of a ROAD (with no markings).  it looks like its pulling out of a carpark here.

It doesn't really matter what rules we follow as many people haven't known what they are and won't know any better next month.

I don't agree that the new rules are more logical but I do believe that making them more consistent with other countries will reduce confusion.

No, carparks apply equally.

Largely because they are defined as a road.

The definition of road (in NZ) is VERY broad, essentially any place the public have access to, is a road.  Even your driveway is a road if you don't have a gate because the public could access it (even if they would be on private property).

SpookyAwol:Personally Im worried about roundabout confusion. Those rules haven't changed, but people are confused enough with them now.

How hard is it to be confused with the fact that if you come up to a roundabout then you're at a Give Way sign (controlled intersection). If there is someone already in the roundabout bearing down on you, then Give Way.

Simple. If they're going to hit you if you proceed then they were there first.

The changes are great, it may even make some people pay more attention to their driving, and other road users (at least for a short while anyway).  Biggest risk will be to cyclists and motorcyclists, because other vehicle users don't expect them, so don't look for them and consequently don't see them.

stevenz: I think most people understand the existing rule, many people just choose to ignore it in favour of saving a precious few seconds.

Changing rules like this seems like a recipe for confusion though. Is there genuinely a _good_ reason for the change?

In my experience most people don't understand the existing rule.  More people than not, give way when not required to and in doing so cause a major snarl up behind them. When they are turning left, with the vehicle(s) following them going straight through, they give way to the vehicle turning right.  Most drivers don't use their rear view mirror.

Even worse is the right tuning driver who expects that the left turning driver is giving way even though the following traffice is going straight through, I've lost count of the number of times I have been nearly T-boned and abused by idiots.

The current rule doesn't work.  It was a good idea at the time, and when used properly it does help with traffic flow, but it's too complicated for the average driver to understand for it to work properly.

+1

insert blue car behind green car it pic. Blue car going straight.
Blue car has right of way. Not green or red car. Sure it different if the lane is blocked off by green car, but normally green car pulls to the side.
