I found the Campbell Live story fascinating. As John points out, never before has white collar crime received such an over the top confrontation from police/armed offenders squad.

America - we know drama?

turnin:  The police rely on the support of the public and I'd like to think that we would all stand behind our local cop. But when we hear this sort of rubbish....thats a real problem for NZ.

I agree, especially when the 'local cop' is being deceitful, as described in the Press article:
"Dotcom said he met Orewa community Constable Jason Homan the day before the raid. He said it was later discovered Homan secretly filmed the mansion to provide intelligence for the raid."
And obviously, since they had reconnaissance, there was no excuse for the armed assault, they knew perfectly well who and what was there. I wonder if this kind of thing would have gone down under our previous prime minister, our current one sure is a suck-up.

All politicians suck up, some suck up to the left, some suck up to the right, don't disillusion yourself otherwise

I have some faith that the NZ Police deal with things professionally and properly MOST times, especially major stuff like this.  Trouble is they can only go on the information provided to them which I guess came from the FBI in this case, and we all know what 'overkill junkies' Americans can be.

Whatever the event it is now up to the FBI to stump up with some evidence otherwise yet another taxpayer compensation payout coming.

There is one thing that strikes me as strange about the raid. The security guard said that the officers doing the raid were wearing t-shirts, jeans and flak jackets. He also said that one of them had a "doo-rag" (bandana) on his head. I've only been in NZ for 5 years, but I don't think I have ever seen NZ officers do a raid like this in plain clothes, nor have I seen hardly anyone wear a "doo-rag". I'm just wondering if they used some officers from the US to actually do the raid? Something stinks about the whole thing...

it's common for plan clothe detectives to be involved in an arrest like this. No overseas law enforcement would of been involved. And reading the indictment it does seem that what has been publicly released including Conspiracy staff members directing people on how to download known copyright infringements that the what is in the indictment is enough for this arrest.

turnin: ...Do we really want police like this, this is New Zealand ? This special squad of officers were supposedly the highest trained members of the force. If this elite force are incapable of reasonable professionalism what hope is there for Mr Plod and his Taser ?  The police rely on the support of the public and I'd like to think that we would all stand behind our local cop. But when we hear this sort of rubbish....thats a real problem for NZ...
....This is very very sad behavior.

I agree entirely.

Their behaviour in this case, especially after watching both 3news video clips, has changed my view on some other things too - for example, I know the Urewera well and went to school with Tuhoe children but I have had no sympathy whatsoever for the views and activities of some of the activists who come from there or of their hangers on from elsewhere. But I now find myself having a very open mind as to accepting their and their local communities claims that the police Urewera raids were entirely over the top and very inappropriate. I now accept the possibilty that was quite likely an arrogant police adventure too.

I also now wonder about the Waitara golf club wielding and the recent spade wielding police shooting incidents.

I have mentioned earlier a few first hand experiences which have been eroding my respect for NZ Police and in my view they are becoming very arrogant, institutionalised and disrespectful of the rights of the public. Friends have given me some of their first hand experiences including the genuine anger of a juror who told me that the only conclusion the jury he served on could come to was that the police were trying to set up the defendant even though it was obvious from the evidence that he was innocent of the charges made (although may have had a shady background).

What are you talking about, "taxpayer compensation"? The Taxpayer has already paid more than enough for this (it was asked on Campbell Live whether the US government will be paying for the raid and the police spokesman effectively said "no").

For sure, then there will be his legal bill (all his accounts have been frozen, so I guess we stump up for that as well), taxpayer funding Crown Law to appear on behalf of the FBI (and they don't come cheap) and then probably payouts for all the grievances (we are good like that).

Yes, and I noticed one guy with a very American looking short-back-and-sides haircut.
