I'm confused. The box says it's a 1001HA but when I use speccy to look at the motherboard, it reports as a 1005HA.

Dreamy:The salesperson (one of the managers actually) said they were sort of extending their boxing day sale, and could offer me a 3 year warranty plus the installation of an antivirus (he didn't say which one and I didn't ask) for the special price of only $119! I politely declined and he asked why...I said it's because I can install the antivirus myself and that there are many free ones out there that were better than the paid ones.

He then proceeded to tell me that that wasn't true and also that since there was no optical drive, I couldn't install from disc. I guess he didn't think about internet or usb key install (or perhaps because I'm a woman he thought I wouldn't be able to do it myself?).

Then he tried to push the warranty aspect of it, asking what I would do if it broke down after the 1 year warranty period. I replied: CGA.

Anyway, I'm happy with my purchase and it will be very handy on my trip back to Canada later this year. Hope everyone else enjoys theirs as well.

I think I just dealt with the same guy. Exactly the same push (with Norton software in hand), and seemed quite upset when I said I had the Antivirus covered - "but but but...." no thanks, I have it sorted "but but..." and then proceeded to push the extended warranty cover for $55. eesh! I guess they've been seriously pressed to try and recover some of the financial loss.

Anyway, I'm well pleased. My mother picked one up too and she's not upset either. Heck, it's an ASUS netbook for only $288!

The only difference is the textured lid. I don't think the mobo reports that ;)

Picked mine up this evening, didn't realise the HN were open until 7:30!
Very happy with it and currently loading XP Pro on it so I can connect to the domain at work.

I got asked if I would like an extended warranty for $119 instead of the normal $179 but I said "No thanks" and that was that. They probably ask that for everything they sell.
Didn't get any hard sell for anything.

Picked up from HN Lower Hutt, at first that they couldn't give it to me as they haven't been processed in the system, then the manager said its good to go. Pleased with it so far.

I didn't get any hard sell from the salesperson in the store.

bazzer:
ajobbins: I don't believe price is relevant to CGA.

Of course it is!  The Act uses words such as "reasonable" and "acceptable".  What do they mean?  Well, it depends on a lot of things.  It depends on what a reasonable consumer would think was acceptable based on the nature of the goods, the price, and any statements that have been made about the goods. A concert violin is required to meet a higher standard than a child's cheap instrument.  Why?  Basically because it costs more, right?  Or more correctly, its better wuality and therefore it costs more and you expect more from it.

If you had two seemingly identical netbooks and one cost $300 and the other cost $800 would you expect them to be of the same quality?  I woudn't.  However, in this case the $300 one is actually "worth" $800 so maybe I would expect more from it...  I don't know how that would go down if you went to court over it.  I don't think they'd buy the excuse that it was on sale because it was of cheaper quality.  I would say a reasonable consumer would expect it to last just as well as the same model not on sale.

The point remains that price (as a proxy to quality) is relevant to the CGA.

Yes the price of an item is relevant, as the price is usually an indicator of quality, when compared to other items of different prices. In general a cheaper retail price, often indicates poorer quality, or a lesser known brand. In this case however, even though you paid $288, the item is actually worth and sold normally for $799, it is just that you have got a special [rice. Therefore you shouldn't be penalised by the CGA, simply because you got a good deal on an item. It is an interesting  situation, and I wonder if it has been tested in court.

Isn't that just what I said?

Also, the Consumer Guarantees Act singles out price as a factor in what is reasonable:

"as a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the state and condition of the goods, including any hidden defects, would regard as acceptable, having regard to?

(f) The nature of the goods:
(g) The price (where relevant):
(h) Any statements made about the goods on any packaging or label on the goods:
(i) Any representation made about the goods by the supplier or the manufacturer:
(j) All other relevant circumstances of the supply of the goods."

So bazzer is definitely correct.  See http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1993/0091/latest/DLM312808.html?search=ts_act_Consumer+Guarantees_resel&p=1 (I tried linking this, but the Geekzone forums ate the link.  Three times).

Picked em up, they are really neat. Stoked with the purchase, any minor flaws anyones commented on dont seem major enough to worry about. It gets a little hot but thats expected.

Overall, impressed and about to get down to business with win7 on em.

Not sure if it's possible with HN but I would be more inclined to purchase a warranty directly from HP.

Hey, if Crown forklifts can issue warranties on anything with forks, HP can issue warranties on anything with a hard drive! ;)

noddy76: Yep, runs with no battery installed, Battery life seems quite good from my use last night/this morning, only the first cycle so might get better yet.

Cheers noddy76.  Curious to know as I've seen a couple of laptops (admittedly old now) that refused to go without the battery installed.  I don't really want to be constantly cycling mine as I don't expect to be using it on battery too often.

Anyone tried to adjust the memory assigned to graphics yet?  Is it 128MB max or 256MB?
