Change for changes sake in my opinion.  Not a step forward.  Too much white space at the sides of the screen.

Too much white space? They are probably planning to sell that as Stuff does and turn the whole page into a single horrible ad space framing the content.

I agree, but accept that someone's got to pay for the content.  Although I doubt 'free' newspaper websites will remain free for very much longer.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I am not saying there shouldn't be ads - we run ads on Geekzone otherwise the site would go under next month (and please add Geekzone to your adblocker white list folks, thanks).

My point is that this is a bit too much:

Yeah that's one of the worst they've had in a while. Those TAB ones each week pale in comparison to this one!

I don't mind them too much myself, and to be frank, a newspaper is far worse when it comes to adverts. The ones I do hate those are ones that obscure the news and you have to wait for them to disappear, and you can't clcik them off. Those ones deserver to be adblocked. Normally I don't use any ad blocking and click on peoples adverts.

Regarding the "waste of space", I think it's probably for a very good reason.

I've worked in newspapers and magazines doing design & layout for 15 years.

The reason they don't take up the whole page is the same reason we have columns in newspapers - people struggle to read stuff that straddles both borders of the page. The human eye starts "dropping off" after about 40 letters. It's why pages of books are taller than they are wide.

I prefer forums that are narrower too.
