I don't consider motorbikes options for two reasons:
- Higher risk of injury or death on a motorcycle - I had one friend killed on a motorbike (open road), another had a serious accident that took years to recover from (city)
- The weather in Wellington isn't that great, you need a lot of wet weather gear that doesn't work so well with suits.

If there were no cars or bad drivers on the road, maybe, but there's so many shocking drivers no way would I risk a motorbike in Wellington. A scooter wouldn't get my to town, even though it's only a 10 minute drive on the motorway.

I drive in, early to avoid traffic. I could take public transport but that takes 90-120 minutes per day, driving takes me 20 minutes. I value my time highly, and I can afford both petrol and parking. Even if the price of petrol doubled I'd still drive.

I catch a bus to a ferry, ferry for 40 minutes then private car to work. From desk at work to couch at home (or vice versa) is about 1hr40minutes.

yes I'm about the same, but I have a massive 20m walk out to the office.

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

I most days ride a motorcycle 12 km to the ferry for a 35 minute ride to the city and then a 15 minute walk to the office. Fuel costs are low $70 a month but the ferry costs $355 for a monthly pass.

that would be an ecumenical matter

I'm in Wellington and I cycle commute from Tawa into the CBD most days. It's actually fairly safe except for a few spots where you have to be ready for bleary-eyed motorists.

It takes me the same time as the train when you factor in walking to and from the station at each end. Even faster if there's a breakdown on the line.

FWIW, I religiously obey all the road rules and that includes the bicycle road code. I sometimes get cars coming close behind because I'm taking the lane, but they can wait. I'm not putting myself in a gutter or car door, for their benefit.

:)

Because I have to have my wits about me the whole way on my bicycle, I can't think about anything else. It's a great way to have two hours a day thinking of nothing but the ride.

Biggest issue I see in NZ is poor rider, and driver, training. Most people on 2 wheels are more aware and connected to the whole traffic environment than those inside vehicles, although that doesn't stop some of them taking exceedingly stupid risks.

Some people will be dicks regardless of their mode of transport.

I drive from North Shore to Newmarket (approx 50km return). Petrol is about $50 a week, parking is $10 a day (reimbursed by work). However, I also tkae my wife to work in the city and another friend too. Even with a monthly bus pass, can't justify not driving with a carpool.

Now, if only the T2 lanes at the North Shore onramps had dedicated lanes leading to them (e.g. Constellation!). I hate waiting with all the single occupants until I get to the T2!

Tell me about it. OUch on the $355, at least they have reduced the price for the next 3 months...

I used to first take bus with monthly pass then later realized train saves both money and time so used train monthly pass.

Now I am driving since 1st of September this year to save both time and money. I drive 13.4 km everyday, round trip. I get free parking at work if I am early. And I usually work early.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but I can only think of one person I knew vaguely that was killed in a car accident. I can think of two others that died in car related incidents, but not in the general course of driving normally. I had a motorbike from 15-22, and knew/know others with bikes, and can't remember any that died riding them. What's possibly interesting is that I can think of 5 people I know of that died in 4 separate aeroplane crashes - all relatively small planes (private and commuter). Only one of these 5 was the pilot. I have no links to the aviation industry, so it's not like I just happen to know a lot of people that fly.

So, if I can make a suggestion, travelling in a light plane is possibly one of the most dangerous ways of travelling. Think I'll stick to my bike!

I drive to work in the car. About 10km mainly 100km/h zone.
