Are there any cinemas in Auckland showing in HFR? I will put up with 3D if I must, but not if it's 24p.

Plenty of Cinemas in Auckland.... Hoyts Sylvia park, City cinemas etc.... just check that the particular session you are going to is HFR

In Auckland you also have the 3D IMAX option, but IMAX is not HFR darn it!!! If it is needed anywhere it is IMAX.

Just really disappointing they broke it up into 3 films. 2 would have been enough. One review like read calls it ' bore of the rings'
But I guess they are trying to maximise revenue from it

The book is awesome. It is the only book I read. didn't read the Lord of the rings as was to boring for me. So hope the movies live up to it.

I have heard it is far better seeing it at the conventional framerate. Apparently the eagles talons at 48fps look like they are made out of that spotty material they use for gardening gloves, so I presume the higher framerate exposes all the tricks they make which are normally hidden at the normal frame rate. In order for it to look good at 48fps, I pressume they would have to invest a lot more in making the special effects more real and in greater detail. I have heard the bluescreen stuff looks really bad. At least it is downgradable. I have heard that at 24fps the movie is really good and on par with the LOTR.

I guess it's not that different to the changes that needed to be made after TV switched to HD. They weren't used to such definition, so makeup techniques etc all needed to be changed. Why would 48fps be worse? Just needs some work, someone had to be first.

It is, but it does expose defects a lot more clearly. I guess it will improve a lot over the next few years, as this is sort of a test movie to try it out. Shows a lot more work is needed though to get it right.

I saw it at WestCity, 3D HFR. I thought it was great. Yes it certainly looks different to film, because is it not film.
The HFR was particularly noticeable during the mass action sequences, which were very impressive indeed.
I guess in a way it's similar to comparing NTSC to PAL, NTSC is inferior in technical terms, but can look "nicer".
It would be interesting to see it in 2D but I'm very happy with the 3D HFR experience.

Not sure which version I will see yet. Probably 3D HFR. But I am one of these people who will pick up the flaws. There were a few dodgy effects in the LOTR, especially with the treepeople and the bluescreening which looked poorly done. But their Gollum animation work was top of class at the time.
