What makes Snowden different from Deep Throat?

One is a hero, the other a traitor? The Washington Post clout?

Felt's identity was not known for many years and I don't think anyone has ever described him as a hero.

The reporter he made contact with became a 'hero' type figure and is still. In the Felt/Woodward case the disclosures pointed directly at the American president ordering the planting of listening devices in the opposing candidate's party's offices.

Responsibility was easy to assign and around 40 people went to jail for their part in it. Ironically many years later Felt himself was charged and convicted of violating civil liberties in relation to something completely different. Not only that, it is debatable what effect Felt's disclosures were intended to have.

Snowden's disclosures in no way assign responsibility to any persons for illegal action even though agencies have exceeded their statutory mandate. Although a president does have overall responsibility, it looks more like a systemic problem and there is no damning tape of any president saying he wants to track all Americans even if it is illegal.

Simply put: historical perspective.

At the time of the Watergate scandal there would have been debate and almost certainly some would have called Deep Throat a traitor. He did leak confidential information which was against assurances he had given. Now we put that into the context of US Presidential corruption and abuse of power. We view Deep Throat as someone who stood up against what was wrong in the only way he could.

Today Snowden is seen by some as someone who betrayed his country and made them vulnerable to terrorists (yes, I am well aware that is a gross over simplification). With forty of so years of hindsight he may well be hailed as someone who stood up for personal privacy and freedom against intrusive government scrutiny which threatened the liberty of everybody. A true American hero.

My note of caution would be this: History is written by the winners.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Absolutely.

Another thing to beware is that "conspiracy theorist" is now a catchphrase - applied as a defense mechanism, used in much the same way as "tall poppy syndrome" is used by (media advisers for) high profile individuals caught behaving badly - in an attempt to discredit those placing them (or their clients) under scrutiny.

Sometimes conspiracy - especially when it resonates with public sentiment - can be so effective that the barrow being pushed becomes "common knowledge" (ie in NZ history, for a century "everybody knew" that Moriori preceded Maori in settling NZ).

I guess the blame lies with both the skeptics and the conspiracy enthusiasts.
All these silly "inside job" "false flag events", HAARP, Chemtrails etc claims have reuined the term for when genuine conspiracies are afoot. These guys discredit themselves every time they start typing.

Everytime theere’s a big political event, mass murder, natural diaster etc... it’s only a matter of minutes before the internet is flooded with paranoid YouTube ninjas, weaving all manner of crazy theories.

Every recent mass murder seems to be a "false flag" event in the eyes of the paranoid.

Channel surfing on the History Channel I found an episode of "Conspiracy Theory" (or similar, it's the one Jesse Ventura fronts) that was truly bizarre. Apparently world leaders are really "reptillians" (shape-shifting reptiles who control the world by taking human form grabbing political power to manipulate us all). I didn't have time to watch more than a few minutes, but the "proof" is apparently:

- nearly all world leaders can trace their ancestry back to the British Royal Family
- two video clips where Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama briefly appeared to have lizard eyes, and
- a shot of G W Bush licking his lips "like a lizard does".

I didn't know the "History" channel had sunk that low.............
