That's extremely frugal for that engine on that condition dude.

RON 98 ? I've always wondered what the 2.3 would be like if you run it on 91.

I should have mentioned, that's on 96.

FYI in our experience it paid off to run the 2.3L on 96 and to run the 2.0L on 91, presumably you'd run a 1.5 on 91 too

I didn't even know that you can get 96 haha. I've only seen 91, 95, and 98.

Doh! Yep, 95 my bad. They switched from 96 to 95 a few years ago, I keep referring to it as 96. I think we ran a couple of tanks of 91 but the higher cost per litre was worth it in terms of greater mileage to run 95 in the 2.3L, but not in the 2.0L. Presumably this extrapolates down and you'd run 91 in the 1.5L

Disrespective: My MPS 2.3 Turbo has an average of 9.3L/100k on it's onboard computer (Averaged over about 10,000k's and an even mix of open road and around town driving). On the open road in 6th I get about 6.5-7.5 depending on the day. Flying up a hill around town in third i've seen it jump up to over 60L... briefly.

LOL you must Nana the thing. Even factory specs are 9.9L/100K, I get about 11L/100K, but pretty much all around town.

Have seen mine hit 99L/100k boosting up hill on the motorway.

I guess i must've not been in NZ long enough to know.

Anyways, I think I'm set either for the 1.5 or 2.0
I'd prefer the 2.0 since if you guys can get it around 9 for the MPS then the 2.0 can surely be driven for 7.5 or 8 ish .

The only problem is my budget (10k max) ...110,000 km is probably what i'd be willing risk for either engine. As I'd like to have it for a few years.

Right now i'm researching everythhing, common problems etc. And in september ish i'll start the real hunt (test drive etc.)

How's the rust guys ? People in Toronto with the mazda 3's have suffered numerous counts of rust even on a 3 year old. Is the paint that thin ? I'd most likely get the 04-05 gen.

Do they have snow where you live? It's the salt and grit they put down in snowy climes that causes cars to rust out prematurely.

Oh I'm in Auckland lol. But as you can see it rains so much! and rainwater has a small concentration of acid I think dunno.
But yea in Toronto it snows heavily (like the rest of Canada).

But then again , Japan is really snowy too in the winter.

One of the reasons I'm looking for a new car (new to me not brandnew) is that my corolla's clearcoat on the roof has pretty much wornoff and the paint near the borders of rear windshield has started to bubble and peel off (one spot actually has rusted and you can clearly see it)
But this is after 20 years! So it's a testament of how awesome Toyota is.

Unfortunately their crop of cars between 2000-2006 is rather ugly but indestructable-reliable. So that's my 2nd option. My #1 is still an MZ

Hey folks,
So I ended up getting a 2004 Toyota Allex instead with the 1.5 engine.

I test drove the Axela with the same displacement engine and it felt soooo slow.

I think it's because the axela frame is around 1240 KG and the Allex (corolla 9th gen basically) is 1090.

I got it for $10 K ...done 64,000 KM , auto , dvd player, Free band expander (which stupidly reduces the frq -14 mhz ...weird number), full service, oil etc.

The sales person said to run the engine (1NZ-FE) ...on RON 95 because i'll get better mileage ....wth ? I thought the nz-fe has only 10:5:1 compression ratio, so wouldn't 91 do fine or will it cause knocking ? Will I see a difference ?

Also, ...this is really annoying, but i've called up my insurance company (AA) ....to transfer the 3rd party insurance over to my new car. That went well but THEY INCREASED MY PREMIUM! ...from $30.99/mth to $33.99 ..............

BUT but ....it 's the same policy and only 3rd party ....they dont ahve to replace anything on my car at all.

What is the difference if i drive an Audi and crash someone's corolla ...VS ....me driving a Corolla and crash someone's corolla ??

He said there might be more damage in the event of a crash .....wtf.

Hi, I too am looking at purchasing one of these cars in the next month or so ( waiting on some money to come through, lol ). As a female who knows not a lot about cars, am I making the right choice?? I have loved these cars since they first came out, dont want to spend any more than around 13 k on it though, and where is the best place besides Trade me to look for one, thanks.

for $13K you should be able to get a very decent one range 04-07.

The majority will be the 1.5 engine , but if you keep looking and looking you should find a 2.0 one with low km etc etc.
Make sure your test drive is very thorough, try brake test, motorway test (especially hilly onramp and especially on the 1500cc variant).

For piece of mind , get a prepurchase inspection, even if your car is a toyota. ...I learned my lesson lol.

Get the dealer to agree on all the things to be done for the car in writing before you even pay for a single cent (say chip repairs, band xpander etc etc, depends.)

My source were mainly trademe, but autobase is pretty good too. But alot of the dealers are on trademe , ...and alot of them are centered at either Otahuhu (great south rd) ...or northshore (glenfield)

Definitely don't come alone, bring 1 or maybe 2 other people preferably one that knows abit about cars and is strong minded, to thwart stupid agressive salesmen.
