The banning on modern electronics, and wireless networks on commercial flights was actually started by the German Nazi Party in 1937. This was to prevent poorly made Russian suitcase computers exploding mid flight, while being used by passengers, which had downed at least two 150 seater jets in the year previous.

Liquid lunch per chance?

Clearly a mistake - in 1937 they would have been the National Socialist party.....

And I am pretty sure they didn't have 150 seat Passenger Jets in 1937.

I can't believe I am the first person to point out that anything called a 'computer' in 1937 would not have been air transportable, let alone fit into a suitcase. Are we talking of Human computers? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_computer ) Maybe they ate something dodgy?

Cough, Macuser is clearly taking the pith, or taking drugs.

He is a mac user, he will believe anything however obviously wrong as long as there is some skewed way in which he can deem it to be cool.

Interesting! Is that because they don't know what black looks like?

Arguably because they don't know what looking seems like.

Darn it - Stuff/Dom Post has removed the great macro shot of a harmless hover fly from their story about death by asian hornet:

SaltyNZ: You may also be interested to learn that doctors still prescribe cigarettes to people with certain illnesses. Despite their known impact on the lungs, they are an effective relief for certain kinds of bowel condition. For one person I know, the increased risk of lung disease later in life is far outweighed by the advantages of not spending that life sitting on the toilet.

Very interesting, can you elaborate? And can these people get out of the extra tax imposed on cigarettes?

My friend has particularly severe irritable bowel syndrome, for which other treatments didn't really work. On a bad day she can literally be stuck in the loo all day. Nicotine relieves the symptoms of IBS, so she can usually get on with things normally. Her doctor even recommended to her to smoke during her pregnancy because it was better than the alternative. I don't think she gets out of taxes though. She buys cigarettes at the same places everyone else does.

Can she not use the Nicotine E-Cigarettes ?

In 1976 USA had landed the Viking landers on Mars. 30 or so years later, they did it again with another lander / rover.

30years before 1976 is 1946, and we had barely entered the jet age, and the rocket age. Big leap in technology from 1946 to 1976, not so much from 1976 to 2006.

Are we stagnating ?

I vaguely remember there being a reason why she smoked ordinary cigarettes instead of e-cigs or patches, but I don't remember what it was. It may have been as simple as that she preferred the real thing. After all, if I needed caffeine for some medical condition, I wouldn't take pills. I'd just drink more coffee.

Nope there just isn't a pressing for space exploration a the minute that would justify the massive costs.

There's been plenty of innovation in lots of other areas.
