He only has two posts, the one starting this thread, and the other asking about tvnz on demand cache.

Makes me wonder if he is doing market research for somebody or something like that.

Maybe Sky TV??

2. DNS - requires a device capable of dishing out different DNS to different devices.

No device required on devices where you can choose DNS setup yourself. ATV is one such device, PS3 is another. Just set it up to use your DNS service for unblocking and voila, you are set.

The way you set it up is a bit flasher, but there is no actual need for it unless you have a device where you can't control which DNS service to use.

I've set up this post as I'm doing an article for a university magazine about TV and movie piracy in NZ (It's pretty prolific among students!). So this is part of the research as to how people are doing it.
Knowing the proportion of respondents who are netflix subscribers is useful as well, thanks!

Dlibert, think you would be better off asking the students at a university (don't do a tech only one) and see what the numbers are there.

I knew it. I thought when the OP asked the question it sounded a bit generic. Geekzone is definitely not a representative proportion of the New Zealand population.

Yep, well aware. Like I say, this is just a part of the research I'm doing. I'm not taking responses as a representative sample of NZ, just getting some insight.

Well I can tell you it's pretty prolific in all sectors of NZ society these days.

Make sure to post link to your article once complete. Interested to know how you get on! They really need to open their eyes and give people what they are asking to pay for.

Just my 2 cents though

Yeah, but it may be used in a discussion as to why people pirate, and some of the alternatives that they could use (including all the unnecessary hoops they need to jump through when doing so).

The implication in the above posting is that Netflix subscribers are pirates. I'm sure you don't think so, but please ensure that you don't imply that paying Netflix subscribers are pirates.

When I signed up, the mrs asked "why don't we just torrent?". I said I'd rather support the system in some way, and get it in our region eventually. She was cool with that.

freitasm: It's not really "illegal" to have Netflix. The hush hush is just so that Netflix, Hulu and other services don't go closing access to VPN services, etc.

Netflix really doesn't have any incentive to do this. If they do = loads of lost revenue.

Edit: Just read the other 3 posts which say the same thing.

Have only got it on one TV at the moment. Only issue for me is my current data cap. 150GB for me at this stage is not enough for a month!

What we ended up doing is changing the streaming preferences to 'medium resolution' which ~ 720p. Made a huge difference on data use.

Then we moved to a rural area and with rural broadband, changed streaming preference to 'low resolution' ~ 576i. Is just do-able with 40gb and 3 people using Netflix.

My wife had related concerns.

Her: Is it illegal?
Me: Not illegal, no. But it is against the NetFlix Terms of Service. Somehow I don't think they mind that much though, as we are paying customers.

ACK about the region stuff. However if it does ever get to NZ, I seriously doubt it will be as awesome as the US or UK variants. The NZ iTunes store is living proof of that. We still can't hire/purchase TV shows. Hopefully any eventual Netflix AU will be better for you.
