Charging now. Will try a wet shave soon, but bear in mind instructions say it can take up to three weeks for skin to adapt if coming from other shaving system (e.g. blades). Since I've using a trimmer for a while I don't think it will be too bad.

Will let you know the experience.

As a man who has never used anything apart from a wet shave in the bathroom hand basin i am reading this thread with intrest , i may consider shifting my method

I just purchased one of these.. It's not really 50% off the street price (other retailers sell this for around US$249) but it's a good price for what it is.

That is true, the triple head one will be far superior, and I have one of them with the triple heads. But to be honest, I don't find that the rotary ones compare to the braun syncro foil one I have, which is over 10 years old. It's RRP was anout $650, but it was on special at the time for $250. The philips isn't good for around the neck, while the braun is good everywhere, and for about $60 you can get a new head and foil for it which makes it like new. Also has a LCD screen and countdown timer of minutes remaining, which the philips don't have. ALthough they seem to have removed LCDs on newer models, which maybe to reduce cost/ increase margins.

yeah - it's been my experience that you'll get a significantly better shave in all areas of the face and neck with a foil shaver than a rotary shaver.

Dammit. You guys are making me second guess myself.

Some do give you a 30 day trial, as you really don't know until you try them. But I think philips is a good starter shaver, and philips was my first one. The only negatives I think with foil ones is that they tend to be noiser, and the foils can crack and cut you if you don't first see it is cracked. They will crack over time as they wear out, but mine didn't crack for a good 5 years, and then you just buy another foil and cutter for it. But there are good and bad foil ones. The foil one I have also has another cutter inbetween the head foils to cut longer hair.

Linear foil shavers give a closer shave than a rotary action. But are generally slower and noisier.

I'm ham-fisted, so dropping my Braun foil razor was an expensive exercise.
I then moved to the top of the line Philips, and for 5 years it was excellent. However, over time my skin changed and I ended up with shaving rash on my neck... so I've gone back to a cheap Panasonic foil razor for a while. It has solved the shaving rash, but it does take its sweet time...
I'll probably move towards a high end Panasonic or Braun early next year - but I am yet to be impressed by the Braun's feel or complexity. Maybe a new model will arrive by then?

Been using the Philips Series 9000 since Friday now. Always wet shave with a Nivea cream, under the shower (cool thing is waterproof). Very smooth finish, and so much faster than a blade.

Read it can take up to two weeks for skin to adapt but have not seen any side effect - no rashes or rough patches yet.

I just bought a Philips from the Harvey Norman outlet store here in Hamtown. Marked down from $120 to $40, so I figured it was worth a go. If I don't like it, I can always pass it on to my 15y/o who is going to need to start shaving properly pretty soon.

Also, do you guys use Gel/Foam/Other? What brands? Nivea, Gilette etc. Maybe something more expensive than the supermarket ones?

It shows what a complete and utter rip-off Briscoes are when their 50% off brings it down to the same retail as every other retailer sells the product for normally.
