networkn: The discussion over dinner tonight was around what purpose putting 1080 into baby formula actually has? Babies aren't responsible and are indefensible, whomever is making the threats will have lost their target audience and weakened their message. If the message was "well if 1080 is safe then why can't we put it in food?" this attack hasn't been thought out because the proportional volume of 1080 to go into a can of baby formula to simulate the amount sprayed over the vast areas, would be so small as to actually not have any affect on babies most likely, and if they use more, then they aren't drawing reasonable comparisons.

The whole idea is flawed.

Second agenda in play?

Sorry I am not sure what you mean? Could you elaborate?

Not every one believes in infant formula as an alternative for breast milk!

To implicate that the government would perpetrate a hoax threat in order to save face, considering the associated magnitude of potential detriment to the economy of the nation, is preposterous.

Sure. It never happened before.

I am glad mauricio jumped in. The moment I saw people start labeling the OP 'tin foil', 'conspiracy theory', I am almost 99% sure that the thread will be derailed. People who like to label others/personal attack in a discussion, in all honesty I believe they usually don't have any idea how to back-up their story - or lack of facts/understanding.. (those who know the least are often the most convinced of their understanding)

I personally did not think of 'mass surveillance' after hearing this news but there are more questions than answers...

I don't even understand why prime minister has to get involved in this at all? Should'nt it just be a police press conference?

oxnsox: My take on this.
- Someone made a threat that had a set date for action (end March)

I would love if this can be confirmed - Why the content of the letter is not made public? This will stop the speculation at once.

- Police (and Govt.) assessed the likelyhood of it being real as low, AND they had 4months to investigate/verify.

They have four months, 36 detectives (operation Concord) working on the case - why the urgency to notify the media today?

- There was no immediate need to notify the public

If they have a real concern with this threat (they do, hence the media frenzy today), immediate notification is justified so that others can watch out. If this guy is a real psycho/criminal, can he not change his mind at once - bring this date forward?

- Publicity about this would only be negative on a wider economic scale (not every country reacts to these things the way NZers do)

The way how they deliver the news today - it causes great publicity - with Prime Minister, MPI etc involved. It would have been a small story if it was just the police that make the statement. Isn't it?

- Plan to notify public, if necessary, prior to threat date (when govt. and industry have credible evidence to support claim is false)

This does not make sense - why the urgent press conference with prime minister, MPI? What are they trying to achieve here -if the threat is false. I mean why bother releasing this information?

- Someone leaks some detail to media, forcing govt. into a media event

Is this a pure speculation? If it is NOT, they should have clearly stated this - so that no one will be speculating the issue!

I agree and this is also possible - I have seen those who are so against infant formula. They can be very emotional about this.

Those in anti 1080 supporter, none of them apparently has been interviewed by the police. It makes me think that the police did not think them as the perpetrator?

Dingbatt: This was revealed on the same day as Apple reveal their Apple Watch.
Coincidence, or an attack on the world's most valuable company?

Just trying to bring something 'geeky' to the discussion :-D

I even saw something suggesting that the AU$14,000 gold version ( a nice gold paperweight in 18 months when Watch 2 is out..!) was going to affect the gold price.

Surely an attempt by the Gnomes Of Zurich to take over the world?

As an aside, I drove down the West Coast last week and there are "Ban 1080" signs aplenty in fields etc out there. They really don't like it.

Attack the idea not the person people :)

And for the record - if you call me a troll I consider it a compliment (but in this case at least, I am not trolling, just exploring potential answers to some unanswered questions).

I certainly find it interesting the Prime Minister jumped right on the terrorism train (tho not unexpected) despite the police specifically saying it is not terrorism. Whether he had a hand in the release today I do not know, but I will not be the least bit surprised if he uses it to push his surveillance agenda.

Do anyone remember the Tylenol Murders in Chigago (sorry kids if you are too young to remember that)?

These things are not terrorism. These things are extortion.

People crying "terrorism" have either no idea what the concept is, or want to use it as FUD to support something.

Clearly, there is a world of difference between this event and terrorism.

Terrorist threats and possibilities are heavily publicized. The imaginary threat level would have been increased from 'non-existent' to 'low' and some quite draconian laws would have been introduced.

This was only a direct treat against a small proportion of New Zealanders. So obviously it was better to only let our trading partners know and not release any information to the public. At least until the media found out.

Although, I must admit, I am confused by John key referring to this as 'Eco Terrorism'!

Eco? = economy? Perhaps referring to the media terrorising our economy.
