dclegg: My favourites are when people totally butcher well known sayings & idioms.

yeah, but it's a mute point. Granted it's annoying when people make such fragrant errors, but I could care less. For all intensive purposes some people just make mistakes, it never seizes to amaze me how many.  Sure it would be nice to nip it in the butt, but it's all one in the same to me.

dclegg: My favourites are when people totally butcher well known sayings & idioms. I was at an indoor netball venue once where there was a sign misstating "For all intents and purposes" as "For all intensive purposes"

It gets up my goat when people do that.

I was waiting with baited breath for someone to reply with an example.

Yeah, an the funny thing is the spellchecker thing passes "irregardless" with no problems.

Question BDFL: if someone was to call someone else a "grammar Nazi" on the forums would that be considered to be invoking Godwin's Law?

Depends on context. In this discussion, probably not. In a political discussion, most likely yes.

And that would be either a permanent ban or a week holiday depending on user's history.

We all make mistakes, I remember the last time I did.  It was a rainy day in 1991 .....

Dammit that used to be my line but I could always narrow it down to exact time :P

I made a mistake once, it was back in 1977. I thought I was wrong, but I was right.

I have an associate with a PhD who uses bad grammar.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
