Geektastic:

My point remains, who gives a brass farthing for what the brand of the tv channel they are watching is?!

"Oh I must watch this brain dead drivel I hate because it is on my favourite channel!" said nobody, ever.

Viewer patronage is surely almost 100% dependent upon channel content, not channel brand?

Yes.

I think they do it because they think they can get away with it. Because the PR BSers told them it was a good idea.

mclean: Going back to the OP, I wonder if it's a form of station identification, which is a legal requirement for some broadcast radio transmissions. I think on US TV it's at least few seconds at the top of the hour.  UK TV stations seem to do the same.  Also radio stations here but more frequently than that. Just guessing.

30 seconds post each of the (excessive!) ad breaks would be bearable. I see no need for it to be there the whole time - some of them are burned in to my plasma screen now!

Screen burn in from a water mark would be very rare given the 'movement' behind the water mark. Do you live pause a lot ?

Not as rare as the the manufacturers would have you believe. I have the top of the line Panasonic plasma from the second to last year they still made plasmas (so only a couple of years old), and I have the TV 2 logo burned in. Never pause live TV. And it didn't take long to get there, first noticed it after only a couple of months and I don't even watch a lot of free to air TV

TV2's on screen logo is a lot more opaque than the other channels, perhaps they are aiming to advertise to you regardless of what channel you are watching.

I have TV2 logo burn in on my telly too. Mind you, I do have a 17 year old  Panasonic projection television

Perhaps a class action lawsuit against TVNZ for damage caused to our televisions as a direct consequence of watching their channel.

I'm only half serious as mine is only noticeable under certain specific conditions. However my plasma is by no means old. Also OLED is apparently susceptible to burn-in too - I'd certainly be miffed if I paid the fortune that an OLED TV currently costs, and then had a channel logo burned into it.

Ours is 2006 I think (Samsung). That probably makes it an antique these days - I understand we are supposed to drop a couple of grand a year replacing them...

You may think it bad in NZ .... I'm currently in Australia and not only is the channel ID larger than life in the corner, but as each segent of a film or program starts the bottom quarter of the screen has an advert for some upcoming program!

At random times, too, the area above the channel ID has pop-ups advertising some other program or sponsored event!!

Very annoying sealed

That sounds like blasphemy in GZ.   I thought that we always upgraded as soon as the next  greatest upgrade comes along.  You'll be stoned at the next GZ service..money-mouth

PS My Sony LCD set is 2007 BD vintage (Before Digital)

Geektastic: This is bugging me.

Why is it necessary to have a stupid logo interfere with my viewing?

Because they can?

Seriously. Whilst I may share your frustration, (in my case the "disgust" at ruining the occasional and rare "quality" viewing opportunity) ..... compared to many countries we have very little to moan about. Intrusive "self promotion" is still in its infancy here in NZ.

Come to think of it, everything about NZ TV tends to lag behind the rest of the world!

My Panasonic VT50 55" plasma is still better than most TVs on the market, so not replacing any time soon. Sure, it's not 4K, but neither is any of the available content - so who cares.

Those 1/5th screen popups are already here, usually just after the advert breaks, or sometimes thru the "feature" itself ... usually self-promos, so I dont get the point - just annoys the bejesus outta me. No wonder FTA is dying with stunts like this.

That must be.

Also - anyone remember when documentaries and factual programs assumed that their audience had better memories than goldfish and so did not spend the first 5 minutes of each segment post-adverts repeating what they covered in the segment before?!
