Once you trigger any charges you get stuck with an import entry fee and a biosecurity entry fee that explain that $47 approx amount. Plenty of explanation on Customs site, surprised that invoice so lacking in detail.

That biosecurity thing is a rort too.

What additional work is required due to the item costing over the limit for tax free import? None at all.

Not a rort at all, our primary industries are our life line here, each and everyone of us here are dependent on it, I am very happy to pay a small fee to protect that.

That might be true - except there IS no actual limit - they just have a publicised amount below which they waive the charges (likely because the cost of gathering those "smaller" amounts would be more than the amounts themselves actually brought in). It's actually levied against ALL imports, its just that the "additional work" is not charged on to you if your import is worth so little as to attract less than the collectable amount of duty and GST.
