I have a landline.  It's used for recording messages and occasionally talking to "Microsoft Windows Support" if I happen to be near the phone when it rings.
I don't bother attempting to answer it most of the time.  Most calls are made on mobile now, for the few calls that are even made.

Linuxluver: Aside (in addition to my previous asides) - I actually saw someone use phone book yesterday. Made me realise I probably haven't used an actual paper phone book to make a call in over a decade....

I use mine all the time. They are great for flattening posters out!

We still have a landline.  The missus and I both have plenty of free minutes in our mobile plans so we only ever dial out if we're phoning a call centre (where you could be on the phone for ages before anyone even answers).

We did agree a while ago that we should keep it because our parents won't call us on mobiles - it's just that 70s/80s old people mentality - but over the last few years my father has had a couple of strokes and he no longer calls anyway, so now we only get calls from my inlaws and telemarketers and scammers.

I've been trying to get SWMBO to let me cut the landline off completely to save hundreds of dollars a year and cut down on unsolicited calls: "Win-win!"  Then she reminds me that then her parents couldn't call and I just say "Win" again...

Cut it off anyway.

It'll likely be weeks before she notices and you can just say "oh - must be a fault. I will get on to them..." with an innocent look! ;-)

Well, it seemed cheaper than taking a contract out on the MiL...

And besides - I do not have 47's phone number.

I can understand old people not wanting to use a mobile phone, but I don't see why they wouldn't call one. What difference does it make to them?

My elderly mother always assumes that if I don't answer the phone then I must be "not home" because she doesn't understand that I can take the phone with me when I go out...

On a fixed income every bit saved means something down the track.

I confess I have no idea how they work but will probably need one at sometime, but, do Never Alone Alarms etc require landlines to do their thing?

Still have landline, mainly because we do make a fair amount of calls and the wife hates using Skype/VoIP for some reason (dont ask). I'll make her see the light one day....

Generally I believe yes because POTS works without power. I don't think it is written in stone but it is preferred.

About 39c / minute as apposed to free.

I would have thought that would depend on what particular calling plan you have, but I guess a lot of elderly people are getting ripped off by their telcos because they don't understand how to select a telco and calling plan that gives them best value.
