If the weather IN Dunedin is getting you down at any point, just head over the hill (north or south) and the weather will probably be far better.
There was a lot of advice early on, much of it about how far away some places are (Mosgiel, Brighton, Outram, etc). I wonder if you'd like to give the locals an Aucklanders perspective on how far away these places are.
The last week or two has been very very unusual for Dunedin, I can't remember the last time it's been like this.
Also be aware if you are getting fibre to expect a month delay unless your property already has it

Yeah, am expecting a delay. Looks like i should have ordered DSL first, as I need an internet connection to work from... Whoops...

If you desperately need broadband and are stuck waiting to be connected check out Skinny broadband which runs off the 4G network, $200 upfront cost for the modem/router(can't resell/reuse so it's useless once you leave) and $55 a month for 60GB. It's probably the best value for money you will get if waiting for adsl/fibre for a few months. That being said Dunedin does not have congestion issues as severe as other major cities.
It depends on the area. I'm in Opoho where it's not that common, on my street of 12 houses only 2 have garages and not all have some sort of off-street parking.

A few extra minutes!? I thought the students were too poor to drive and walked everywhere! How times have changed... haha
Have mainly stuck around the central part of Dunedin, although we have driven out to the airport to check it out... It did seem a bit far out to be honest. But at least it was free flowing traffic there and back. It seems those places are quite far in terms of distance, I would imagine the commute to not be so bad. But can't say for sure as I haven't done it..
But based purely from personal preference, would rather live within the fringe city suburbs than further out.

Pleased to say that our rental has a double garage and ample off street parking. It is in a relatively new sub-division (2007) tho.
