In the UK, it does, at least the former.  You either speak proper like the queen or poor like someone on coro street.  Some poors do try to imitate proper but they stand out.

Very true. You can easily identify people's social background from their speech and vocabulary in the UK. Also from which newspaper they read although that is less easy nowadays.

To some extent you can do that here also - anyone using 'yous' instead of you, for example, is unlikely to have attended the finest schools in the land...likewise using bro every second word and so on.

Best thing about the kiwi accent is that when I was  in California the girls used to love the accent... Ahhh California girls.... those were the days.

I heard an American narrator on TV last night for an hour keep referring to a Greek philosopher I have never heard of called Play-Doh.
