Anyone made contact to tell them?

Yes. I have not heard back.

I did the test too.

Another question was 12 is to 4 as 9 is to? ... and the answer was 3, as expected.

So, I have no idea how 1 was the answer to the original problem.

MikeAqua:

You are all missing the point.  The right answer is whatever the police say it is, because the police are never wrong.

Your statement is frighteningly close to the truth when you think about things like the Arthur Allan Thomas case or Hillsborough '89

How about this one?

I chose my answer because the 4-sided shape was divided into 4 equal parts, so I went with the answer that was a 3-sided shape divided into 3 equal parts.

But it seems the actual answer is something else.

I can actually see their reasoning on this one, in that the first square matches a part of the second square (ok it matches all 4 parts), so if you apply that logic the first triangle (equilateral?) can only go into the one that they marked as the correct answer, as that is the only one that has a matching (equilateral?) shaped triangle as part of it

I go the knot one wrong I did exactly the same as the other poster

Is it one of those psychometric type tests?

When you have a poorly worded problem people will intemperate it differently. To be honest I don't really technically understand how you come to an answer of 1.

The only pattern I can see is the number before the slash, but I would personally intemperate these as fractions if I were solving the problem.

None of those three 'correct' answers makes any sense to me; I would have chosen the same knot and triangle you guys did. How did they get 1? Or that triangle? Maybe the test is 'Does the candidate care enough to say "Hey, this can't be right!" :)

I think the test is to see who would challenge poorly worded instructions when you complete the feedback at the end. Those that do are automatically removed. Complete obedience is required.

12 is to 4 as 9 is to? ... and the answer was 3, as expected.

Or 12 is 8 more than 4, so 9 is 8 more than 1

Or 12 is 8 more than 4, and 9 is 3 less than 12, so 9 - 5 = 4

It totally depends on where you want to take it, and what answers are there that could match.

Bunch of donkey does sound about right.

I think this question makes sense if the thread title is changed from maths question to police entrance test.
